Ship Operations in Extreme Low Temperature Environments

Ship Operations in Extreme Low Temperature Environments by Alexander Olsen
English | PDF EPUB (True) | 2024 | 561 Pages | ISBN : 3031525124 | 75 MB

This book recognizes the fact that the vessels' intended operational profile may vary as some vessels are intended to operate with the assistance of an ice breaker and others are intended to operate independently. The guidance provided in this book is proposed to apply to all vessels that are designed, equipped and intended to operate in low-temperature environments. Special attention is given to those vessels operating for extended periods in the Arctic regions, as this presents specific and unique challenges for vessels and crew members. The application of the guidance in this book is optional. When a vessel is designed, equipped, built and surveyed in accordance with the relevant class rules, and when found satisfactory during class notation survey, a classification notation may be granted which demonstrates the vessel's compliance with the appropriate class requirements for vessels operating in low-temperature environments. Those vessels that are designed to meet the requirements of an ice class are typically required to meet specific class rules around “strengthening for navigation in ice” or other equivalent and recognized ice class rules.

Automated Low-Altitude Air Delivery: Towards Autonomous Cargo Transportation with Drones by Johann C. Dauer
English | EPUB (True) | 2022 | 556 Pages | ISBN : 3030831434 | 130.9 MB

This book investigates Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) with a payload capacity of one metric ton for transportation. The authors provide a large variety of perspectives–from economics to technical realization. With the focus on such heavy-lift cargo UAS, the authors consider recently established methods for approval and certification, which they expect to be disruptive for unmanned aviation. In particular, the Specific Operations Risk Assessment (SORA) and its impact on the presented technological solutions and operational concepts are studied. Starting with the assumption of an operation over sparsely populated areas and below common air traffic, diverse measures to further reduce operational risks are proposed. Operational concepts derived from logistics use-cases set the context for an in-depth analysis including aircraft and system design, safe autonomy as well as airspace integration and datalinks. Results from simulations and technology demonstrations are presented as a proof of concept for solutions proposed in this book.

Traffic Grooming in Optical WDM Mesh Networks by Keyao Zhu , Hongyue Zhu , Biswanath Mukherjee
English | PDF | 2005 | 189 Pages | ISBN : 0387254323 | 11 MB

Optical networks based on wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) tech nology offer the promise to satisfy the bandwidth requirements of the Inter net infrastructure, and provide a scalable solution to support the bandwidth needs of future applications in the local and wide areas. In a waveleng- routed network, an optical channel, referred to as a lightpath, is set up between two network nodes for communication. Using WDM technology, an optical fiber link can support multiple non-overlapping wavelength channels, each of which can be operated at the data rate of 10 Gbps or 40 Gbps today.

This book introduces the latest developments in long-span cable-supported composite cable-stayed bridges, suspension bridges, and mid- and through-type cable-supported composite arch bridges. Based on the engineering application and practice of cable-supported composite bridges, this book systematically expounds the structural systems of these bridge types. It also summarizes the main construction methods, analyzes the mechanical properties of cable-stayed bridges and suspension bridges with composite girders and the influence rule with alternative spans, and proposes the reasonable span range based on economic efficiency. The prospect of using orthotropic composite bridge decks in long-span cable-supported bridges is also analyzed. This book is a valuable reference for both bridge professional technicians and graduate students for research, design and construction.
