Drunk Tank Pink is the second studio album by the British post-punk band Shame. The album was released on 15 January 2021 through Dead Oceans. Following the conclusion of their Songs of Praise Tour, Shame began recording new material for their second studio album. In late January 2020, NME reported that Shame was working on their second studio album, and that recording had been complete. Drunk Tank Pink was met with widespread critical acclaim. At Metacritic, which assigns a normalised rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, the album received an average score of 82, based on 17 reviews. There are moments on Drunk Tank Pink where you almosthave to reach for the sleeve to check this is the same bandwho made 2018's Songs Of Praise. Such is the jump Shamehave made from the riotous post-punk of their debut to thesprawling adventurism and twitching anxieties laid out here.The South Londoner's blood and guts spirit, that wink andgrin of devious charm, is still present, it's just that it's growninto something bigger, something deeper, more ambitious andunflinchingly honest. The genius of Drunk Tank Pink is how these lyrical themesdovetail with the music. Opener Alphabet dissects the premiseof performance over a siren call of nervous, jerking guitars, it'schorus thrown out like a beer bottle across a mosh pit.Songs spin off and lurch into unexpected directions throughouthere, be it March Day's escalating aural panic attack or theshapeshifting darkness of Snow Day. There's a Berlin era Bowiebeauty to the lovelorn Human For A Minute while closer StationWagon weaves from a downbeat mooch into a souring, soullifting climax in which Steen elevates himself beyond the cloudsand into the heavens. Or at least that's what it sounds like. From the womb to the clouds (sort of), Shame are currentlyvery much in the pink.

Shame already displayed plenty of ambition and a penchant for drama on Songs of Praise, but they're twice as potent on Drunk Tank Pink. Though it's named for the color used to subdue violently inebriated prisoners, there's little soothing about the band's second album; in fact, by comparison, their debut sounds almost staid. Following Songs of Praise's success, Shame found new ways to tear things up. Guitarist Sean Coyle-Smith got into Nigerian highlife music, ESG, and Talking Heads, while vocalist Charlie Steen used the highs and lows that followed their whirlwind fame as fodder for his lyrics. It's a combustive combination, and James Ford's production makes it all the more explosive. From the huge guitars and huger harmonies of "Alphabet," Shame sound unstoppable on Drunk Tank Pink, yet they also find new ways to channel that energy. "Nigel Hitter" is a masterful exercise in tension and release, with the rhythm section holding it down while Steen dominates the track as he howls "I'm burning at both ends!" Any time the album threatens to become remotely predictable, Shame changes gears. "Born in Luton" contrasts dense passages that flirt with math rock and wide-open brooding, while the spoken-word verses and free-flowing instrumentation of "Snow Day" underscore how much they've pushed themselves since the Songs of Praise days. Though they put on a good show of being cooler-than-cool punks on shout-along standouts like "Water in the Well," Drunk Tank Pink reveals that Shame are idealists and romantics at heart. They let the pain surface beautifully on "Human"'s lush blend of yearning and mourning, and reach for the clouds on the slow motion grandeur of "Station Wagon." Even in more restrained moments like these, Shame never lose their momentum on Drunk Tank Pink, an often thrilling snapshot of a band headed for great things – and quickly.
