After the destruction of the First Temple in Jerusalem in 586 BCE, a group of Jews settled in Yemen. They remained in exile, sometimes prosperous but frequently persecuted, until the 19th century. They then began to return to what is now Israel, first in small numbers and later in an organized wave with the establishment of the Jewish state in 1948. They brought with them a rich heritage of religious, secular, and devotional (diwan) music, the last of which includes both religious and secular subjects. Every Jewish community in Yemen had it's own diwan, consisting of works from the renowned medieval Spanish poets of the Golden Age of Hebrew poetry, as well as original writings from community members. These poems, in the Hebrew, Aramaic, and Arabic languages, were intended to be sung or chanted. According to the album's compiler Avner Bahat of the Jewish Music Research Centre, the Yemenite diwan is "the richest and most valuable of all." Eleven poems are presented in this 1976-77 recording. Structurally, the diwan is divided into three sections: nashid (an improvisational response sung without music or dance accompaniment), shira (the primary singing section featuring dance and rhythmic accompaniment on tin cans or copper plates), and hallel (a song of praise restricted to two or three notes around the tonic).
A diwan is a collection of devotional poetry in Hebrew, Arabic and Aramaic, sung by men only at occasions like weddings, and on the Sabbath. Their subject is the Jewish liturgy. This recording includes various poems, the solos of the Nashid or song of introduction, and various versions of the Shira – the centerpiece of the Diwan, accompanied by percussion and dance.Review by John Storm Roberts, Allmusic.com
No longer in print, a search for a used copy would be worthwhile because this is a diverse, properly recorded ethnomusicological UNESCO collection from 1978; my AUVIDIS reissue was from 1990. One of the tracks will be familiar to those who own the Ofra Haza excellent album of Yemenite songs. The three forms of songs are represented here: are liturgical, performed by men and boys in Hebrew and Aramaic; secular, the domain of women and sung in Yemenite-Arabo-Jewish dialect; and the diwan, or poetry, derived from various Hebrew, Aramaic, and Arabic from medieval Sefard to Yemen and sung by men on festivals and family celebrations. No instruments are permitted, other than the percussion of metallic cans and trays. Not some field recording, the sessions were done at the Hebrew University, Jerusalem. The music is traditional, with no electronica or arrangements, as handed down from generation to generation. In this fashion, the special Yemenite-Jewish sound, which has been influential in Israeli folk and popular music, is heard in its pure form.
