Petits Motets were generally sung in the Royal Chapel during the Mass between a Grand Motet and the Domine salvum fac Regem. The most extended piece here is a Miserere for solo voice by the King's surintendant de la musique, Lalande. In fact the nine solo verses are sung in alternation with plainchant which would have been intoned by nuns. William Christie, who directs this intimate sequence, divides the solo spoils of this expressive piece between three of his sopranos, Veronique Gens, Sandrine Piau and Arlette Steyer. It would be hard to assemble three more persuasive sopranos than these to execute the music. Their almost faultless intonation, fresh-sounding voices and careful expression are both musically delightful and contextually apposite. Comparisons between the three are, perhaps invidious but Steyer sounds the least assured, technically and stylistically, among them.
The Miserere is followed by an Assumpta est Maria for two sopranos and continuo. Enter Noemi Rime, the fourth soprano on the disc and a favourite singer of mine, who is partnered by Gens. The composer of this little piece is Louis Lemaire, a pupil of Brossard who was contemporary with Rameau. The vocal writing is more florid than that of Lalande, sometimes moving canonically, sometimes in thirds. The concluding ''Alleluia'' is especially engaging and well sung.
We return to Lalande for the next three items in Christie's sequence. First a two-section motet Vanum est vobis ante lucem sung by Veronique Gens. She is, indeed, one of the most impressive artists working in France at the moment. She phrases eloquently, has a rare gift of conveying every gesture in the music, and possesses an assured, athletic technique. This is, in every way a superb performance. Vanum est vobis is followed by Miserator et misericors which again is scored for soprano, continuo and organ. This one, a more reflective piece at the outset, is sung with expressive intensity by Noemi Rime. Hers is a marginally fuller, more rounded and warmer sound than that of Gens, but the contrast is used to telling effect in the third Lalande item of the group, the Cantique quatrieme where the two singers are heard in duo.
Christie concludes with a Regina coeli by Jean-Baptiste Morin, better known, if known at all, for his secular Cantates Francaises. He, like Lemaire, belonged to the later generation of Rameau. In this piece for two sopranos, Gens and Rime are once again together giving a radiant performance of a joyful piece. But it is for the Lalande that this disc should be treasured, above all perhaps for the Vanum est vobis and Miserator et misericors. Congratulations all round.–Nicholas Anderson
