Best Of 3CD (The Platinum Collection on the first 2009 issue) is a triple-disc set that contains one disc of Enigma’s greatest hits, one disc of remixes, and one disc of “The Lost Ones,” brief instrumental snippets that were used as source material and ideas for full-length tracks. Naturally, this last disc is what’s interesting for the hardcore fan which, unlike the rest, consists of unreleased material - but even the hardcore may find this slightly ephemeral; after all, these were designed as something like work tapes, not for release. The rest of the set is a good overview of basics, but it’s still unclear exactly who this is for, as this recycles too much for the hardcore, and it’s too lengthy for the casual fan.

"First Breath" is an amazing collection of thematic melodies combining soundtrack orchestration, choirs, subtle ethnic touches and great rhythms. The music has that rare quality of being not only complex and imaginative compositionally, but inspired and captivating on the ear and the soul! There are echoes of Vangelis here, and some wonderful ethnic touches - but Catalins music has a unique style and character all of its own, so any similarity to the 'Great Greek' are purely superficial and is mentioned only as a point of reference. Listening to Catalin's music is like being carried away on summer winds to far off lands - from the dusty plains of Africa on "Zulu Spirits Call", to an eastern bazaar of the mystical east on "Nandana, Spirit of Indra". The orchestral and vocal/choir arrangements on First Breath are the equal to anything you would expect to hear on a major film soundtrack. The album oozes quality and is, quite simply. Magical!

Their coded activities extend through the centuries - from antiquity to modern times, and in this way pass on and preserve means, knowledge and realization. Only the point of view is variable, not truth itself.

Following in the precedent set by Enigma's remarkable success in the 1990s, Bella Sonus' Enamoured blends together the more ethereal side of computer-composed world music with a heavy dose of ambient electronica, while differentiating themselves from their obvious peer with the guitar work of Angel Suarez. As it did for Enigma and many of the successive artists to follow - Deep Forest, Sarah Brightman, Delirium - this stylistic template works well, evoking a substantial amount of tranquility and a bit of rhythm in the process. The man behind the bulk of the music here, Robert Smith (keyboards, synthesizer, programming, samples), deserves ample recognition for his accomplishments on Enamoured, but one can't help but find it a bit derived. Still, if one can look past this possible observation, the music gleams with a sense of beauty rarely found in modern music.

Long frustrated by the release schedule restraints of conventional labels, electronic new age Renaissance man David Arkenstone joined with his wife, Diane, to create Neo Pacifica, a label releasing a wide variety of creatively diverse expressions. One of the label's highlights is introducing vocalist/keyboardist Diane as a composer and artist in her own right. With David's composing and production assistance, Diane creates what comes across as a continuous, unbroken musical piece, but is actually comprised of eight thoughtful compositions. The promise of trance in the album title might imply that this will be something of a formless musical experience, but all the ethereal effects (which include her whispery, seductive voice chanting like our subconscious) are given a solid musical foundation, complete with drum machine groove and reasonably memorable synth or piano melodies…
