Originally a Heavy Metal band led by the delirious Vincent Damon Furnier, Alice Cooper then became the stage name of the latter when he embarked on a solo career. A pioneer of shock rock, supporting her stage performances with visual effects worthy of horror films, Alice Cooper made these staging her trademark, giving even more strength to her devilishly heady rock, and spawning many successors such as Kiss or Marilyn Manson.

"Mob Rules" is the 10th studio album by English heavy metal band Black Sabbath, released in November 1981. It followed 1980's "Heaven and Hell", it was the 2nd album to feature lead singer Ronnie James Dio and the first with drummer Vinny Appice. Neither musician would appear on a Black Sabbath studio album again until the 1992 album Dehumanizer. Produced and engineered by Martin Birch, the album received an expanded edition release in 2010.

The Battle at Garden's Gate is the kind of album title that accurately reflects the contents within. Greta Van Fleet isn't much concerned with the modern world, preferring to live in a fantasy of their own creation, one cobbled together with ideas learned from old albums from Led Zeppelin, Rush, and Styx. All these elements were in place on their 2018 debut Anthem of the Peaceful Army, but they're amplified on The Battle at Garden's Gate, an album that makes everything that worked the first time bigger and louder, or just more. The group's unexpected success meant they had the power to enlist an A-list producer, so they brought Greg Kurstin – a Grammy winner for his work with Adele and Beck who also helmed records by Paul McCartney and Foo Fighters – into the studio to help shape their fanciful notions and heavy riffs.

New Wave of British Heavy Metal band Demon were known for their shocking and elaborate performances (quite unique, considering the no-fuss, stripped-down philosophy characteristic of the movement), but never sounded as extreme as their name might suggest. Instead, they forged a mainstream hard rock/metal style, which, though it didn't stand out from the pack, has managed to keep them in business for several decades. Singer Dave Hill and guitarist Mal Spooner had already cut their teeth with various amateur acts in their native Staffordshire, England, by the time they decided to join forces and found Demon midway through 1980.

In the early '70s, Paul Kossoff was a much-heralded young guitarist from a much-heralded young rock band called Free. In a short period of time, Kossoff and his cohorts punched out some classic rock. A brief solo career followed for the inspired axeman, but his untimely death in 1976 from a drug-related heart attack put an end to the potential that his peers and fans were looking forward to seeing fully realized. All one can do is celebrate and enjoy what this stylistically unique and utterly precocious musician left behind, and this 17-track disc, which culls Kossoff's best work from both his days with Free and as a solo performer, is an excellent way to do just that. A player who made his name with unusual phrasings, brazen fills, and an intuitive use of sustained notes – and rarely going for fretboard-smoking speed – Kossoff had a prototypical signature sound. His ability to do the work of two guitarists – Free, for the most part, was a barebones guitar/bass/drums/singer outfit – was one of his greatest strengths and, despite a good deal of studio dubbing, you can hear it in places on this album. The best cuts are definitely the eight Free tracks, which include the raunchy "The Hunter," the good-time rock-blues of "Ride on a Pony," the dramatic "Fire and Water" and "Mr. Big," and the band's all-time classic, "All Right Now".

Night Ranger was riding high on the success of Midnight Madness and Seven Wishes, a pair of albums that actually brought the arena rockers into arenas. They had stardom and they knew they wanted to keep the Big Life – which is exactly why their 1987 follow-up to Seven Wishes sounds so stilted…

Grand Funk Railroad was, at best, a singles band, capable of turning a couple of crunching rockers and hooky singles out with each album. Though it may be missing a fan favorite or two – and that could mean something concise and catchy or meandering jams like "T.N.U.C." – this does have the overwhelming majority of their best songs, including not just hits like "We're an American Band" and "Some Kind of Wonderful," but also album tracks. Some longtime fans, like Homer Simpson, may find favorites missing, but this remains a nearly ideal summary.

Detective wasn't without its detractors who dismissed the short-lived band as a poor man's Led Zeppelin. But Detective had more to offer than that. To be sure, Detective was heavily influenced by Zeppelin, but it wasn't a knee-jerk Zeppelin clone – and its bluesy brand of hard rock also owed a lot to Bad Company and Free and Pretty Things. Released in 1977, It Takes One to Know One was the second of Detective's two studio albums. This LP is uneven; a few of the tunes are pedestrian and forgettable (especially the sappy MOR numbers "Warm Love" and "Something Beautiful"). But when Detective hits its mark – and it often does – the listener is happy to have this record in his/her collection.

In the late '70s, the British Lions recorded a second album, but could not get it released in either the U.S. or the U.K., and the band broke up. The LP did appear on Cherry Red in 1980; this reissue adds a bunch of demos, live cuts, and radio promo commercials…

"Never Say Die!" is the 8th studio album by English rock band Black Sabbath, released in September 1978. It was the last studio album with the band's original lineup and the last studio album to feature original vocalist Ozzy Osbourne until the 2013 album 13. It was certified Gold in the U.S. on 7 November 1997 and as of November 2011 sold 133,000 copies in the United States since the SoundScan era. The album received mixed reviews, with critics calling it "unbalanced" and insisting its energy was scattered in too many directions.

Never understood why the boys dubbed their third record 7 Wishes and not 3 Wishes (maybe cause Shooting Star snagged the idea first); whatever the case, the title track, concerning a magic lamb, burns down one side and up the other…

Jewels has some great material on it. Not all Queen collections include tracks from Innuendo and Made in Heaven, as well as Night at the Opera. It's also nice to see "Radio Ga Ga" on the roster, a song that despite its wince-inducing title is actually one of the most beautiful odes to the medium ever written. The inclusion of so many newer tracks pushes a pretty big chunk of classics out of the job like "Fat Bottomed Girls," "Tie Your Mother Down," and "The Game," but it's a noble attempt. This EMI-licensed Japanese import does a decent job at trying to reign in the many phases of Queen.
