Formed in 1968, Man earned well deserved praise for a series of wonderful albums issued between 1969 and 1976. Their US West Coast influenced sound also gained them a loyal following on the live circuit where their instrumental prowess was given room to shine. Initially enjoying success in Germany, by 1972 Man had begun to enjoy success in Britain and from 1972 they recorded a series of acclaimed sessions and live concerts for BBC Radio One, had a BBC TV documentary made about them and appeared on the influential TV series The Old Grey Whistle Test. With ever changing line-ups throughout the 1970s, Man disbanded in 1976 after a farewell concert at The Roundhouse in London (a location of some of their legendary concerts). They reformed in 1983, appearing at The Reading Festival that year and would go on to record a further series of excellent albums and undertake extensive touring.

Best known as a member of the legendary Welsh band Man, Deke Leonard also enjoyed a successful solo career in the early 1970s.
Iceberg (1973). Though Deke Leonard had made his reputation playing progressive rock in the Welsh group Man, his first solo album has more of a roots rock feel than anything released by that band. Roots rock played by someone with a taste for odd arrangements, perhaps, but roots rock nevertheless. "Lisa" and "Jesse" both sound like something that the Band might have turned out, country fiddle, organ, and all, though Leonard's distinctive, reedy voice makes it unlikely that anyone is actually going to mistake one for the other…

Progressive Rock / Psychedelic Rock

Man were one of the most promising rock bands to come out of Wales in the early '70s. Along with Brinsley Schwarz, they helped establish the core of the pub rock sound, but they played louder and also had a progressive component to their work that separated them from many of their rivals…

Man's importance in the history of Welsh rock music cannot be understated. Fusing the worlds of Psychedelia, Blues, Rock and Roll and West Coast inspired rock, they were simply one of Britain's most original groups of the 1970's. Along with label-mates Hawkwind, Man were true champions of the "underground" spirit.

Diamonds and Coal is a studio album by the Welsh rock band Man. Despite longtime-frontman Micky Jones' lengthy lay-off from the band due to illness, his son George now steps up to the mic for this return. Diamonds And Coal is a rock 'n' roll album full of goodtime joie de vivre. The overtly proggy, labyrinthine moments have been shelved for the time being - in their place there's a warm, jangly, but still musically-dextrous tone and tempo. Like many other other bands of a similar vintage, Man have a sound informed by a 1960s blues-rock sound, as demonstrated on the title track, but they can't ignore their pedigree: the guitar skills of Jones and Ace on the atmospheric All Alone are Roger Waters-precise and clean…

Man's first American release in 20 years, Call Down the Moon arrived in 1995, the successor to 1992's brilliant Twang Dynasty, and a worthy one at that. Almost half the album tracks find the band approaching the nine- or ten-minute barrier that, in the past, was always the hallmark of Man at their most magical, while the song titles positively ooze the old spirit as well - "Burn My Working Clothes," "The Girl Is Trouble," "Call Down the Moon" itself. Indeed, that latter cut might well have crept out of any past incarnation of the band you could dream of; it's a gliding slice of anti-gravity that lifts the album into the atmospheres that Man have always been capable of reaching, but so rarely actually get to.
