French pop star (and significant other of Johnny Depp) recorded her English-language debut record in 1991; the self-titled disc was a bit of a flop commercially, but, surprisingly, succeeds artistically. Producer Lenny Kravitz gives Vanessa Paradis some of his best songs and she really can carry a tune with her breathy little-girl vocals. The highlights of the record are many, but the songs that will have you smiling like a fool at the sheer poptasticness of it all are the gliding funk with orchestra of "Natural High;" the strutting girl group of "Be My Baby;" the sweet-as-sugar sunshine pop of "Sunday Mondays;" the psych-soul of "Your Love Has Got a Handle on My Mind" (which features Paradis' most assured vocal and a nice background assist from Kravitz); and the sweet soul of "Just as Long as You Are There."

At the beginning of their career, Level 42 was squarely a jazz-funk fusion band, contemporaries of fellow Brit funk groups like Atmosfear, Light of the World, Incognito, and Beggar & Co. By the end of the '80s, however, the band – whose music was instantly recognizable from Mark King's thumb-slap bass technique and associate member Wally Badarou's synthesizer flourishes – had crossed over to the point where they were often classified as sophisti-pop and dance-rock, equally likely to be placed in the context of Sade and the Style Council as was any group that made polished, upbeat, danceable pop/rock. The band's commercial peak came with 1985's World Machine, but they continued to record and tour sporadically throughout the '90s and 2000s.

Royal Southern Brotherhood's second studio album! "The Royal Southern Brotherhood is a Southern rock, blues, R&B, and soul supergroup of sorts, with a pedigree that is pretty impressive. For one, the group's main singer is the amazing Cyril Neville of Meters and Neville Brothers fame. Guitarist Devon Allman is the son of Gregg Allman of the legendary Allman Brothers Band. Guitarist Mike Zito has had a critically acclaimed blues guitar history of his own, while bassist Charlie Wooton played in Zydefunk and Yonrico Scott has been the drummer for Derek Trucks and other high-profile acts. It's a pretty good resumé for a new band. The Royal Southern Brotherhood released a self-titled debut album with Ruf Records in 2012."

This 25-song CD (originally a shorter LP called The Singles Album) is a handy collection of the band's most well-known English tracks from 1963 through 1966, plus their B-sides and some songs off of EPs that charted high in the U.K. Except for the final three songs – "Groovin'," "Can't Believe It," and "Did You Have to Do That?," none of which are that easy to find on compilations – it's all assembled in chronological order from their debut single "Why Should We Not" to 1966's "You Gave Me Somebody to Love." The notes by John Tobler are a bit superficial, and the American EMI Manfred Mann: The Definitive Collection is a little more adventurous. Also, the sound here doesn't match the presence and clarity of more recent 24-bit transfers. Nonetheless, this is a respectable compilation for the novice or the casual fan. The presence of the B-sides, including lost gems like "What Did I Do Wrong" (a killer Chess-style blues number written by Tom McGuinness) and the Goffin/King-authored "Oh No Not My Baby" (one of Paul Jones's greatest R&B-style performances), assures that one gets a truer picture of the band's output and their focus on R&B, jazz, blues, and folk, than the A-sides by themselves would provide.

Originally a Heavy Metal band led by the delirious Vincent Damon Furnier, Alice Cooper then became the stage name of the latter when he embarked on a solo career. A pioneer of shock rock, supporting her stage performances with visual effects worthy of horror films, Alice Cooper made these staging her trademark, giving even more strength to her devilishly heady rock, and spawning many successors such as Kiss or Marilyn Manson.

The 2nd album from the Glasgow based AOR act Strangeways is rightly regarded, as the finest British release the genre has thus far seen and may even be the best that has ever come out of Europe! Terry Brock had made a very successful career out of singing backing vocals on some of the biggest albums of the period, including for Journey & Foreigner. This was his and the band's day in the sunshine. 'Native Sons' is little short of a masterpiece!

After the success of their Jimi Hendrix-produced debut album The Street Giveth…and the Street Taketh Away (also available from Real Gone) and its hit “Good Old Rock ‘N’ Roll,” the members of Cat Mother repaired to their Woodstock cabin (pictured in the album gatefold reproduced here) and started writing songs for Albion Doo-Wah. The record had much more pastoral, country feel to it, no doubt in part due to the replacement of Charlie Chin by multi-instrumentalist folkie Jay Ungar, who also brought several songs to the group. But there was definitely something in the air in the late’-60s/early ‘70s Woodstock scene; Albion Doo-Wah has several scoops of that timeless, Americana-laced Basement Tapes/Music from Big Pink fairy dust. CD debut, and one long, long requested by the band’s fans, with a gorgeous remastering job by Maria Triana at Battery Studios.

2008 archive release featuring the best of Marc Bolan and T. Rex's recordings for the BBC. If there's one artist whose success can be almost directly attributed to support from the BBC, it's Marc Bolan. His initial success was unquestionably down to the close friendship he had forged with John Peel, who had Bolan on his show on countless occasions recording sessions, reading poetry, even singing Christmas carols. On his last Radio London show before the station was shut down Peel played no less than six Bolan recordings. This single disc set is the best of the BBC recordings, taken from the three CD retrospective released in 2006. 24 tracks including 'Telegram Sam', 'Ride A White Swan', 'Debora' and more.

Like all major figures of a genre, Lou Reed was a genre of his own. A rather complex being. Has an oversized ego. But to the certain genius… There was first this Velvet Underground, more influential in the last twenty years than in its time at the end of the 60s. This first banana album produced by Andy Warhol, now considered one of the greatest records in history and which sold only a handful of copies on its release in 1967… Then this solo career which, although uneven, will leave among the most beautiful songs in the history of popular music of the twentieth century. Lou Reed was a voice. An almost spoken song.

Bruce Springsteen once said he intended to make an album with words like Bob Dylan that sounded like Phil Spector where he sang like Roy Orbison, a nifty summary of many, but not all, of his artistic ambitions and a key to his appeal. Unlike any of the other singer/songwriters saddled with the appellation of "the new Dylan" in the early '70s, Springsteen never hid how he was raised on '60s AM radio. He loved rock & roll, whether it was the initial blast from the '50s or the mini-symphonies from the days before the Beatles or the garage rockers that surfaced in the wake of the British Invasion, and all this could be heard within his wild, wooly collective the E Street Band, a group who debuted on his second album, 1973's The Wild The Innocent & The E Street Shuffle, and who would support him through most of his career.

When the British Blues Boom exploded in the late 60s it brought to fame such now legendary names as Eric Clapton, Peter Green and John Mayall. But there were many other fine musicians creating great music and establishing their own careers in bands and on record. One of the most important performers was Dave Kelly, a young, multi-talented London-born slide guitarist, singer, composer and bandleader. Dave first came to fame with the John Dummer Blues Band and went on play with Paul Jones and Tom McGuinness in the highly successful Blues Band, while leading a parallel life with his own outfit the Dave Kelly Band.
