The 5.6.7.8's are an all-female Japanese garage rock trio, whose music is reminiscent of American surf music, rockabilly and garage rock. While their biggest international exposure was a cameo in the Tarantino flick Kill Bill, 5.6.7.8's are much more than one-hit wonders, bearing the proud distinction of being the prime and longest-enduring Japanese garage rock girl band. Featuring a revolving cast of musicians (only one of them ever being a boy) and possessing small but loyal fanbases in countries from China to the United States. The group have so named themselves because they play music reminiscent of 1950s, '60s, '70s, and '80s rock. Currently this CD Collection includes 9 CDs.

The 5.6.7.8's formed in Tokyo in 1986. The band embraces retro American hot rod culture and a rockabilly breed of garage rock that shares ascetics with the Cramps. The band has a maintained a strong cult following since their incept, but has never catered to the mainstream. They play a mixture of cover versions and originals, always fraught with style and attitude. Despite only releasing albums on indie labels, and selling in modest quantities, they have fans all over the world and have toured internationally since 1992. Through their extensive touring they are in touch with many like-minded bands and labels, and their tracks can be found on many compilations.

While their biggest international exposure was a cameo in the Tarantino flick Kill Bill, 5.6.7.8's are much more than one-hit wonders, bearing the proud distinction of being the prime and longest-enduring Japanese garage rock girl band. Featuring a revolving cast of musicians (only one of them ever being a boy) and possessing small but loyal fanbases in countries from China to the U.S., 5.6.7.8's is the brainchild of the sisters Ronnie "Yoshiko" Fujiyama and Fujii Sachiko, and it reflects their love for music of the '50s to the '80s, bluntly alluded to in the group's name.

The band was formed in 1986, at the height of the garage rock hype that seized Tokyo at the time. The first lineup included Fujiyama, who handled the vocals, and Sachiko (the drummer), supported by guitarist Rico and bassist Yoshie, who was replaced by Mikako in time for the band's debut demo Golden Hits of the 5.6.7.8's (1988). It was followed by the band's first EP Mondo Girls A-Go-Go (1989). In 1990 Rico and Mikako defected to start Sleaze Sisters, and were replaced by bassist Akiko Omo and guitarist Eddie Legend, the sole male member of the group, who used to don a wig to blend in better when they played live, but still lasted only a year before departing to start MAD3. After that, Fujiyama picked up the guitar herself, although 5.6.7.8's still performed as a quartet, with support member Gaku on the saxophone. The band's first full-length album, The 5.6.7.8's Can't Help It!, was recorded in 1991, out not only in Japan, but in Australia and the U.S. as well (the American release came in 1992). That began a period of the band's active overseas expansion: they toured Australia and America and released the single The Spell Stroll on the French label Wee Records. Japan remained their main playground – they had several releases there in the '90s, namely EPs I Was a Teenage Cave Woman (1992) and Pin Heel Stomp (1997), as well as the second full-length The 5.6.7.8's (1994), – but they also had six singles and the EP Bomb the Twist (1995) out in the U.S. The lineup continued to shift, with guitarist Aya joining the band for several months in 1995, and Omo leaving before their first big Japanese tour in 1996, replaced by Yamaguchi Yoshiko. In 1997, Fujiyama took a short break from the band, releasing the solo single Coney Island.

The years between 1998 and 2002 saw no releases, but some heavy touring in Japan, America, Australia, New Zealand, and Europe. In 2002, Quentin Tarantino heard their CD in a clothing shop in Tokyo, and soon invited them to star as themselves in a Kill Bill scene (they contributed the song "Woo Hoo" for the movie soundtrack). 2002 also saw 5.6.7.8's releasing the album Teenage Mojo Workout and the EP Pretty Little Lilly Can Dance No More, and their compilation Best Hits of the 5.6.7.8's came out in America and Japan in 2003 (it was released in Europe the next year). In 2004, Teenage Mojo Workout was released in Britain, and the single Woo Hoo reached number 24 on the local charts, but long-term British success eluded them. The same year Yoshiko gave up her post for Omo, who returned to being 5.6.7.8's bassist after an eight-year hiatus. The band has kept quiet since 2004, releasing no new material but playing the occasional live show………. In 2011 was released the Live LP "Live at Third Man", and finally, in December 2014's the band released all-new studio album "Tanuki Goten".

Japan exclusive compilation Remastered & reissued on CD in 2003 by Radio Underground Records

This album collects the early days of the 5.6.7.8's, who, obviously, rose to fame in America with their appearance in "Kill Bill vol. 1". But this album isn't quite the Japanese doo-wop sound that they rocked out with in "Bill". No, this is a collection of their beginnings, their garage days. On this album, which has a wonderfully rough, basement recording sound, the ladies (and a dude back then) rock out with a style that sounds like The Go-Gos, The Ramones, and The Cramps jamming together in two to three minute bursts. There's even a track (Ramones) that starts with a Ramones song, which is then joined by the girls shouting "Hey! Ho! Let's Go!" in a frenzied, off beat pattern, which then changes into a poppy beat that sounds like it could have been written by Belinda Carlisle. There's even a pretty wild cover of "We Got The Beat". But throughout it all, the 5.6.7.8's retain a little bit of that punk rock doo-wop that eventually became their trademark sound. This is, without a doubt, their purest album ever.

More screechy girl garage punk from Japan, this time around from 5.6.7.8's, who incorporate more of an influence of surf to their raw production and instrumentation. A lot of reverb and belting vocals can be heard throughout Can't Help It – as well as sloppy renditions of "Wolly Bully" and "Wild Thing." Fun, but nothing really outstanding, as these recordings could use a little studio tweaking.

The trio of retro-rockin' Japanese ladies has a fun rock & roll attitude, complete with '60s mini-dresses and maxi-beehives. Musically, the band has equally fun moments, but the cartoonish shtick can wear thin quickly. Simply put: once you're hooked, you're hooked. But, if the 5.6.7.8's don't appeal to you instantly, they likely never will since there's not a lot going on under the surface party atmosphere. The 5.6.7.8's are often more concerned with creating a goofy good-time atmosphere than creating truly substantial or innovative rock music – and that's not a bad thing. For fans of their playful – and deliciously primitive – brand of garage/rockabilly, they are the top of the genre, along with acts such as the wilder, more over-the-top Guitar Wolf. The band excels at taking the hip-shakin' elements of surf, rockabilly and garage rock and stripping it down to its bare bones. Even with minimal or sometimes hard-to-decipher lyrics the message is clear. The band's wild, giddy sound shares some common traits with wigged-out brethren such as the Cramps and the Pandoras. Songs with colorful, self-explanatory titles such as "I Walk Like Jayne Mansfield" and "Teenage Cleopatra" add to the band's charm. As far as garage revival acts go, they're probably not the best players or singers in the pack (a trait that often adds a punk rock appeal to their otherwise sweet sound). Nonetheless, the group's carefree sound and merry mangling of English are infectiously fun for those who like their rock & roll to be a little bit more bubblegum, favoring style over substance. Though they'd long maintained something of a cult following, the band's profile was slightly heightened in early 2003 and 2004, when Quentin Tarantino featured the revived group in his Kill Bill films and one of their songs, (the super-catchy 1996 ditty, "Woo Hoo") was picked up for a telephone ad campaign.

If there was ever a Japanese beach dance party film, the 5.6.7.8's would be the band that everyone would boogie down to. All-girl rockabilly that can be equally tough and raw while at the same time bouncy and feeling good, Pin Heel Storm is what would happen if Supersnazz and Shonen Knife collaborated together in the studio. Slow moving at times, and the screechy vocals can wear thin after a while, but, all in all, a nice romp of '50s revival with a garagy edge.

The 5.6.7.8's - Original CD Collection (1986-2016) [Combined & Expanded Re-Up]

The 5.6.7.8's - Pretty Little Lilly Can Dance No More (2002)
EAC | FLAC+CUE+LOG or MP3 CBR 320 | 13:22 minutes | 95 or 31 MB

The 5.6.7.8's have a great vintage rock and roll sound that incorporates adorable Japanese vocals. The musicianship is great, recreating catchy '50's style jukebox rock with fun to sing a long backing vocals.
The first track kind of reminded me of The Who in their earlier years, where "Daddy Goes Out Jail" is more of a boogie song that you'd kick your socks off and dance along to. The third song slows things down just a little bit while the singer croons out a love song. The last tune doesn't have any words, but some wicked organ playing.
At first, I was dssappointed that it was such a short disc for what I paid $30, but it's one of those albums that you can just stick on repeat for over an hour and not want to listen to anything else. The package design is beautiful and reads mostly in Japanese.

Overall, I highly recommend these songs, but try to see if you can find them on a full length rather than dishing out the dough for this one.

The 5.6.7.8's - Original CD Collection (1986-2016) [Combined & Expanded Re-Up]

This Japanese all-girl (except once, for a year or so) quartet-turned-trio is almost certainly best known for appearing in the Quentin Tarantino movie Kill Bill, Vol. 1, or maybe for licensing their song "Woo Hoo" in a commercial. This compilation contains "Woo Hoo", but that track's almost soft enough to be worthy of Shonen Knife, and not at all representative of the ladies at their best. The raucous countdown that opens the disc – "10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 54321!" – gives a much better indication of what the 5.6.7.8's do. They're a punky garage/rockabilly act who write songs like "She Was a Mau Mau", "Motor Cycle Go-Go-Go", "I Was a Teenage Cave Woman", and generally come off like a slightly less distortion-fixated, distaff version of Guitar Wolf. Frontwoman Ronnie Fujiyama's last name is fortuitous, because she's every bit as raw a rock & roll howler as Wanda Jackson, who famously sang "Fujiyama Mama". Her guitar skills aren't half bad either; she cranks it up to almost Link Wray levels of scorch, as her sister, Fujii Sachiko, slams the kit and bassist Omo throbs away. This is amped-up, three-chord rock & roll, sometimes with simple lyrics and other times instrumental (but still punctuated by high-pitched shrieks). The 5.6.7.8's are a Japanese national treasure who deserve the international audience they've earned through hard touring – this disc, which, like its title says, compiles their early singles and EPs (most of which are otherwise unavailable in America, except for the first six tracks, which Sympathy for the Record Industry released as the Bomb the Twist EP), is a near-perfect introduction to the band (though it would have been nice to have "I Walk Like Jayne Mansfield"), and may in fact be all the casual fan needs, since their full-length albums didn't exactly break new ground.
