Personal growth for adults progresses though sequential ego stages, or paradigm shifts, right across our adult lives.
What you'll learn
Understand that adults can change and grow through successive, discreet stages of self (ego) development, and that each stage can last for years at a time.
Understand that our perception of self, others, and the world evolves and changes, becoming more complex and inclusive, as we progress through stages.
Identify the characteristic challenges, preoccupations, and increasing capacity for understanding, as a person evolves through each of the ego stages.
Understand how contemporary psychology converges with ancient wisdom teachings about how the mind works, to give us an unbroken map of developmental stages.
Appreciate how the expectation of positive change can transform a person's potential for growth in their relationships, and their life skills.
Requirements
No prior learning is required. The course is for a general audience, and presented in easy-to-understand language.
Description
What is the process by which adults grow? Sometimes anxiety, depression, stress or trauma are signs that the way we currently understand our self-and-world is in need of updating. Our habitual perspective no longer works for us. The pain of these experiences can prompt us to think outside the square, and that can lead to us evolving towards a new stage of ego development - one which gives us a broader and deeper understanding of our self and our world. As we progress through the stages of ego development, we begin to inhabit a more inclusive paradigm of self, world and reality. Most of the time ego stage changes are taking place without us realising, because ego development change is usually very gradual - although sometimes people appear to change suddenly via epiphanies. This course describes in detail the kind of self-perspective and worldview changes that people are increasingly capable of, at each of the 10 stages of ego development. We go through the first few stages during childhood, but most of the stages unfold during adulthood - that is, for those who continue to grow. Not all people grow through all of the potential stages. The course will make you rethink your potential for personal growth. In plain language, this course explains little-known ground-breaking research and theories of adult development, that have previously been available only to academics.
