Description

In this course, participants from various linguistic backgrounds take up the challenge of mastering the RP accent. What changes can we make to help them achieve this?When we create sounds, we position the mouth, lips and tongue in a specific way. The speech mechanisms vary across the different languages. Not only do we need to distinguish the subtle sounds of British English pronunciation, but we also need to understand why the sounds of other languages differ. This course was created to address these issues.Part I of this course provides a review of the tools that will be used to analyze the sounds of Received Pronunciation. In the subsequent chapters, we will meet six students from various linguistic backgrounds: Agata, Tatjana, Kat, Magali, Francesco, Jenna and Ayumu.Prior to filming, each participant was given training to help them familiarise themselves with the International Phonetic Alphabet and the monophthong chart.During filming, participants are given various tasks to identify their weaknesses and seek a remedy. This includes vowel training exercises, sentence practice, and tongue twister exercises. What changes does each student need to make to achieve a more authentic British RP accent?
