Every era has its fashion, be it in clothing, architecture, painting or music. Certain instruments were sometimes more or less "en vogue". In the classical period, the French or hunting horn in particular was extremely important to composers, especially in German-speaking countries. The first "professional" horn players were hunters, who mostly came from Bohemia and performed at European courts. As a result, the horn was increasingly used in operas, oratorios and cantatas. One nobleman who was particularly fond of music was Prince Kraft Ernst von Oettingen-Wallerstein. He maintained a court orchestra in his residence, Wallerstein Castle, near Donauwörth in Upper Swabia, which enjoyed an excellent reputation and with which Haydn and Mozart were in contact. Kraft Ernst also expanded his court library and collected important (music) manuscripts. Today the library's holdings are in Augsburg and are a veritable treasure trove of unknown works by composers who would have been completely forgotten today without the art-loving prince. The music of the director of the court orchestra, Antonio Rosetti, is particularly noteworthy. The composer, who came from Bohemia, had been in the prince's service since 1773 after Mozart had unsuccessfully applied for a position. In Wallerstein, Rosetti composed numerous symphonies and harmony music, giving the French horn particularly prominent parts in his works. Rosetti's outstanding reputation as a composer grew rapidly and his works were distributed throughout Europe, making him one of the most popular composers of his time. His music follows the pattern of Viennese Classicism, but it also repeatedly breathes the spirit of Romanticism, not least through the musical idylls evoked by the horn as an instrument of the forest.
