This reissue of a 1973 album from pianist Abdullah Ibrahim kicks off a series of re-releases from ECM under the banner Re:Solutions, historically-important music presented in modern audio quality. This live set, recorded in 1969 in a noisy club in Copenhagen, serves as a documentary of Ibrahim's performance on stage, yet the essence of his communication with the audience comes through loud and clear. Through the robust rhythms of his solo piano style, Ibrahim re-examines the history of jazz from a South African perspective, with echoes of songs of the townships and vamps that hint of Monk and Duke and much more. African Piano was a highly influential album in its day and it has lost none of its power.
