This is a beautiful combination of pianist and cellist. Two Russians who fit together like a hand in a glove. Both Richter and Rostropovich are extremely in synchronization with each other as they play the beautiful Beethoven Cello Sonatas. What classic pieces of music by Beethoven with two exceptional performers.
In the early 1960's, the cellist Mstislav Rostropovich and the pianist Sviatoslav Richter, old friends from their conservatory days in Moscow, met several times in Austria to record Beethoven's five sonatas for cello and piano. Back then, these works were concert rarities. Only the A major Sonata (No. 3) turned up now and then. The two early sonatas were generally considered quirky, hypercharged and a little strange; the two late sonatas struck many as mystifying, abrupt and downright strange. Since then, these works have become near-staples of the recital repertory, and in this case familiarity has bred affection. They increasingly seem among Beethoven's most original works. Complete recordings, which often toss in Beethoven's three inventive sets of variations for cello and piano, keep appearing.
