With this new b*records release, Victor Julien-Laferriere and the Orchestre Consuelo lay the foundation for a titanic edifice: the complete nine symphonies of Ludwig van Beethoven. Supported by the Festival de la Chaise-Dieu, which lends the exceptional acoustics of its abbey church, this four-year project marks a decisive step for the young orchestra of variable geometry. This first joint project by the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin and the Basel-based vocal ensemble Voces Suaves is dedicated to the musical milieu into which Johann Sebastian Bach was born, and especially to those composers who had a demonstrable influence on the work of the man who would later become Thomaskantor in Leipzig. In addition to pieces from the Altbachisches Archiv (Archive of the Older Bachs), the album features sacred concertos and early cantatas by Bach’s predecessors and superiors from Arnstadt, Mühlhausen, Weimar and Leipzig, providing impressive proof of how highly developed the musical tradition of Central Germany was then.

2024 marks the 500th anniversary of the birth of Ronsard, known as the Prince des Poètes, whose poems have been set to music more than four hundred times over the centuries. This programme has been curated by Denis Raisin Dadre and compares several settings of the same sonnet by 16th-century musicians (Gardane, Lassus, Castro, Bertrand, Costeley) and by later composers such as Charles Gounod, Camille Saint-Saëns, Paul Dukas, Maurice Ravel, Théodore Gouvy, Pauline Viardot and Arthur Honegger, all of whom were clearly seduced by the same Bonjour mon cœur and the famous Mignonne, allon voir si la rose some three centuries later.

Rachmaninov's Third and Second Symphonies are distanced from each other not only by thirty years but also by the turning point in history that bisected the destiny of the Russian intelligentsia. Rachmaninov was full of creative energy and aspirations while writing the Second Symphony, in 1906-1907, even though he sought solitude in Dresden to feel the breath of his Motherland from a distance and to relate his own destiny to it. He was already a different person by the mid-1930s, struggling with the aftermath of his fate as an exile and summing up his life.

An inexhaustible source of inspiration, birdsong has lent colours and sound to all ages. Exploring the sonic palette, whether glittering or woody, of their instruments, Valentine and Gabriel Michaud take us deep into a lush jungle of chiseled melodies and shimmering harmonies. Famous or exotic birds, baroque or electronic, jazzy or contemporary, all together they spread their wings in a hymn to freedom and musical diversity.
