Assemblage 23 is the musical brainchild of Seattle-based musician Tom Shear. Exploding onto the scene with the release of his albums Contempt and Failure, Assemblage 23 quickly became one of the most popular acts in the genre. Collection includes nine albums and two compilations.

Assemblage 23 is the brainchild of Seattle-based Tom Shear, who spent a decade on various electronic projects before finding success as a respected EBM act. For live performances he is accompanied by Paul Seegers on keyboards and Kevin Choby on electronic drums. Shear had previously written music, but his sensibilities began to change in 1988 when he became inspired by the industrial sounds spun by the opening DJ at a Depeche Mode concert. He soon shifted from instrumental synth pop (under the name Man on a Stage) to a combination of punk, synth pop, and industrial influences. Adopting the name Assemblage 23, Shear self-released Wires in 1992, with little interest from record labels. In the mid-'90s, he produced tracks for a side project called Nerve Filter, exploring dark, instrumental techno (previous endeavors included playing bass for the Advocates, as well as the short-lived synth pop project Procession).

Finally, Arts Industria released the first Assemblage 23 track, "Graverobber," on a compilation in 1995. Canadian label Gashed signed Assemblage 23 in 1998, and the following year released the project's first full-length, Contempt. In 2001, follow-up album Failure, a mature recording of electro and industrial dance, was issued and found popularity in dance clubs. After difficulties with Gashed, Assemblage 23 signed with Metropolis in 2001, re-releasing Contempt and Failure. Assemblage 23's first collection of new music for the label, Defiance, dropped in 2002, with Storm arriving the following year. Released in 2007, Meta featured the hit single "Binary," which cracked the Top 25 on the Billboard U.S. singles chart; that same year saw the release of a set of tracks culled from between 1988 and 1998 titled Early, Rare, and Unreleased. The single "Spark" preceded 2009's Compass and Early, Rare, and Unreleased, Vol. 2. Bruise arrived in 2012, followed in 2017 by Endure, the group's eighth studio long-player.

Tom Shears' debut release as Assemblage 23 is a powerful tour through a broken emotional landscape. Pulsing electro melodies hover over ethereal sweeps of sound and play against the sometimes complex rhythms and beats. On top of the layers of sound, Shears' rich vocals resurrect the notion of undistorted vocals in electro music.

The mix of moods varies, ranging from upbeat at the album's beginning ("Surface," one of the few tracks sporting vocal distortion), to melancholy minimalist ("Sun"), to plain scary (such as the pounding melodies of "Skyquake"). "Purgatory" has all the makings of a genre classic – uplifting melody, contrast and complexity, and a stable dance beat. The three remixes at the end provide an interesting contrast and fresh perspective on the album, featuring artists from Pain Station and THD. Despite the album's strengths, some listeners may find that there isn't the variety of sound to hold their interest (arguably partly due to the mastering of the album, which at times can seem flat). This is the only weakness on an otherwise impressive debut album, which solidly puts Assemblage 23 on the map of electro music.

Like most electronica projects, Assemblage 23 is most enjoyable at around 3 a.m. with smoke-streak strobes the only scenery, but unlike most of the band's peers, there's an accessibility that transcends the clubs. Essentially an outlet for Tom Shear with the assistance of studio musicians, the project developed a cult following in the goth-dance circuit with a sound that comes through in symmetrical fashion on his fourth full-length, Addendum; it shows that past covers of '80s new wave classics such as "I Ran" were not out of character, but an extension of what he does best: updating Depeche Mode's more sullen yet surprisingly frenetic dance beats with cheesy (but not in a bad way) keyboards and spoken-drone vocals.

After such a powerful debut release, Failure was a much-anticipated follow-up from electro act Assemblage 23. Tom Shear did not disappoint, and Failure transcended any expectation. The sound of Assemblage 23 has evolved into something darker and more refined, and Shear has more to say. The combination of these elements leaves a release that is energetic, emotive, and uses sound in an original way. Failure opens with one the strongest tracks. "Naked" is honest and uplifting despite the heavy dance beat and smooth electro melody. "I Am the Rain" and "Disappoint" are equally danceable, but again Shear has not compromised the complexities of his harmonies or the gravity of the music in doing this. Tracks such as "Tried" and "Longevity" slow the pace, allowing Shear's heavy vocals to take the fore over percussive synth melodies and sweeps. "King of Insects" juxtaposes haunting melodies over the energy of breakbeats as the artist stretches the limits of the genre in a truly accomplished conclusion to the release. There is enough going on with this release, musically and emotionally, that it will demand repeat listenings. These traits mix to form what could be one of the most important releases of the genre.

Welding together dance beats, slick melodies, and moody vocals, Assemblage 23's Tom Shear crosses the catchy synth pop of Depeche Mode with the dark grooves of industrial on Defiance. Always danceable, always a little disturbing, tracks like "Opened" never lose their pulsating momentum, while grittier numbers like "Drive" skillfully echo New Order by pairing bittersweet synthesizer swells with relentless electro groans. "Cocoon," one of the slowest tracks on the album at 81 beats per minute, is spare, scary, and dreamy. "Maps of Reality" is just the opposite – fast, on the edge, virtually out of control. Defiance might seem a little repetitive to average rock & roll fans, but for listeners looking to return to the gray emotions of '80s, late-Cold War synth pop, Assemblage 23 is unbeatable.

With his previous two records, Assemblage 23's Tom Shear has proven to be one of the most consistent artists in EBM. Though it varies little from Defiance and is just a notch below Failure in terms of impact, Storm can certainly stand on its own. The lyrics are just as powerful as anything Shear has written and, set to cosmic synth and propulsive dance beats, they create an emotional tidal wave of pain and loss. The encompassing "Human" begins the album with the words "There have been times throughout my life when I fell so far/I thought I'd never stand again/I watched my dreams depart." From there, Storm doesn't let up. Shear sometimes recycles his own phrases ("endless loop," "chaos rains"), but it's hardly an issue when the music is this strong. And though "Let the Wind Erase Me" is the first single, any of these ten tracks are just as worthy of that honor. "I feel insignificant, never have I ever felt so small," Shear bellows in "Infinite." He has also never sounded so confident.

It's been a couple of years since the last release from Assemblage 23 though the music scene has been completely saturated with electronic music releases, this new work doesn't get lost, but rather stands out amongst the rubble. As with all albums from Assemblage 23 we have a lot of similarities to previous works. In fact I've heard some critics say that it's "more of the same" from Tom Sheer, but in my opinion that's what makes it great. For example, if Robert Smith and The Cure were still making "more of the same" of their music from earlier years, I would still be buying their albums. So it's great to be able to count on something solid, something steady, something dependable yet always new elements and lyrics, creative, driving and fun in many ways.

Anyone that heard the Accession Records Vol. 3 label sampler release will have heard "Decades" and here we have "Decades V2" to kick off the album with some "slight upgrades" from the original piece. This introduces us to the current direction on this album with some hard-driving beats and a lot of different synths and a little distortion hailing back to the earliest works. This edge remains strong on several pieces like "Raw" with some powerful loops and darker, deeper vocals, though the melodic, driving electro-pop sound shines throughout the entire album as well including this, one of the harshest sounding on the album. One thing is certain by the time you get to the driving beats and electronics of "Sorry", and that is that this album is written for the fans focusing on the dance-friendly music we've grown to love.

The shift to newer stuff on this album starts to show and shine through on "Ghosts" with the addition of some backing female vocals on the chorus. Other innovations lie in the heavy hitting "Raw" though some of that has been done before on earlier albums with the dark and distorted sound. Though each album usually includes a mid-tempo piece of some sort, each one of these is a shift away from the normal danceable beats of the rest of the album. So "Damaged" and "Old" with their slow-moving beat come as no surprise, though they do lack a little bit in style and innovation from other slower tracks previously released and comparable mid-tempo electronic ballads, but I guess you can't be new and innovative forever, at some point you just have to fall back on good, old-fashioned music. Another slight shift in styles is "Madman's Dream" with the vocal styles and range. We usually count on deep and moody, sometimes dark vocals, but on this piece we're treated with a look at how high on the scale he can reach, though they're still angst-ridden and fit perfectly within the Assemblage 23 style we love.

We can't leave this review without touching what are sure to be the floor filler tracks in the popular single "Binary" along with "Decades V2", "Madmans Dream" and half of the rest of the album. It really is the driving dance-friendly beats that creates the center of the music that fans love from this band, along with innovative and well written music and uplifting lyrics that people can enjoy. So with that said, we have another great release that should not disappoint fans at all.

Building on his successful Meta album in 2007, Assemblage 23 clearly knew where he was headed for his newest album, Compass. The 2009 album shows a more polished and mature sound. Solid beats, interesting melodies, and meaningful lyrics give the album a dynamic clarity. From the intensive opening track, “Smoke,” to the danceable “Impermanence” through the heart-wrenching closing track, “The Cruelest Year,” Compass takes Assemblage 23 to the next level with each unforgettable song. The limited Edition comes with a bonus disc featuring two exclusive remixes and three additional songs.

To end a decade of great work from this project, Tom Shear presents us with this latest album after a great reception of the precursor single Spark. This album is packed with ten powerful electro-pop tracks that fans will love, continuing on in the same dance-friendly style we've grown to love over the years.

The album is really one club-friendly piece right after the other with few exceptions, which only add some nice variety to the overall mood and pace of the album. It starts out with a siren and builds up to the pounding piece "Smoke" which becomes the template for much of the disc. There are some great subtle differences that keep each piece new and interesting such as the slight distortion or hollow reverb effect on "Collapse", or the addition of subtle female vocals on various pieces such as "Impermanence" or the excellent single "Spark". "Impermanence" also includes some swooshy trance-laiden synths for some added depth to this piece and the album as a whole. As the album starts to wrap up, another excellent piece along these lines is "Angels & Demons" with a very melodic synthpop approach with plenty of layered synths and that solid, driving beat to carry the melodic vocals.

While the entire album is excellent and it really is hard to pick out a favorite, I have to go with the artist and label on this one as the single "Spark" is really an excellent dance-friendly piece. It has all the elements fans love, melodic and familiar vocals, heavy bass, a solid kick and layers of electronics that will keep people dancing. Those who like a little variety will enjoy "How Can You Sleep" with it's mid-tempo, moody feel, along with "Alive" which kind of breaks the synthpop mold a bit and is heavier in the percussion and pulsing synths. And then to wrap up the album we have "The Cruelest Year" which stands out as a somber, yet beautiful piece with some excellent work bringing the electronic loops to life as layer upon layer build up to a powerful climax and great finale to the album.

Once again we have another excellent work that is perfect for fans of the heavier, dance-friendly electro-pop sounds from this project.

Assemblage 23's album, "Bruise" shows the band sounding refreshed with an increased emphasis on melodies. An extremely varied release with influences from synth-pop, EBM, post-punk, and electronic dance music. Features the tracks "The Last Mistake", "The Noise Inside My Head", and "Talk Me Down".

The limited edition includes a second disc with 10 bonus tracks including 3 new songs and remixes from bands like Grendel, iVardensphere, and Daniel Myer of haujobb.

Tom Shear just never seems to slow down and here we have another great album. As usual, there are several version of this album you can buy including digital-only releases for download, regular packages as well as the deluxe or limited edition 2-disc album featuring 20 total tracks, 13 brand new originals as well as another 7 various remixes.

Over the years we've definitely come to know the solid style of Assemblage 23, whenever there is an Assemblage 23 remix, you can usually tell without really looking at the credits. The solid mix of layered, electronic loops over a heavy, dance-friendly beat are really the signature sound of this project. This album builds on this foundation as one piece after another keeps the listener moving. The lyrical content is dynamic and thought-provoking as with previous albums. It all starts off with "Crosstalk" setting the stage with the driving beats and layered electronic loops all providing the backdrop and canvas for the various soundscapes and Tom's solid, well-known vocals.

As with previous works, there are a few pieces that stand out with maybe a more dynamic, or anthem-like nature. These are interlaced throughout this album, though all are really stellar pieces. "The Last Mistake" is a well done, emotional piece. The lyrics are dark and brooding and the music comes out perfectly to match with melancholy synths moving along over a heavy beat. A bit later we have a piece that's a bit more like an electro-pop anthem in the musical style, with the heavy, crashing beats providing the rhythm and back-drop to "The Noise Inside My Head". "Talk Me Down" appears later in the album with another very dance-friendly beat and melodic synthpop style while still maintaining the emotionally-charged moods through the intense electronics and somber vocals. While there is a bit of variety in tempo and intensity, it's not quite so dynamic as some historical pieces like "The Cruelest Year" or "30,000 ft". Yet I think there are a couple of pieces that this review would be incomplete without mentioning and these include the final track on the first disc "Otherness" and the first piece on the second disc, "Rain Falls Down". These mid-tempo pieces maintain their intensity despite the slower beat through throbbing bass and various electronics and the heavy percussion. With the inclusion of these pieces it really makes this a well-rounded album.

Remixed tracks include "The Last Mistake", "The Noise Inside My Head" and "Rain Falls Down". Each of the remixes are well done, all by artists that for the most part of similar electronics-based musical styles, ranging from Grendel to Cesium:137. In addition to these remixes we have a couple more original pieces, "God is a Strangely Absent Father" and to close the disc we have "Reckless". This final track is an excellent way to wrap up the album with a solid, dance-friendly piece that features all the elements we love from this project. With that another excellent album comes to a close, in my opinion very well done, staying true to the long-established styles we've grown to love while continuing to expand on the slight variety throughout each piece.

Tom Shear founded this Seattle, US, based project in 1988 after he experienced the Industrial Dance music by an opening DJ for DEPECHE MODE. This kind of sound inspired him deeply so that he wanted to create such music himself in the future. Starting formerly as more of a hobby his music finally attracted attention of record labels in 1998. Only in 1999 he signed to a Canadian label but signed two years later to the US Metropolis Records label where his first albums have been re- released. In the beginning the music of ASSEMBLAGE 23 was instrumental as Tom Shear didn’t dare to sing but eventually he started to add vocals to his songs. This is now his eighth studio album. Furthermore six singles, an EP, and two compilations have been launched.

Opening track is an atmospheric instrumental song. The next song is a danceable song. It’s a good thing that Tom Shear decided once to overcome his insecurity of singing or else we would have to miss the quality of his lyrics. ‘Bravery‘ shows to be an insightful song about depressions without being pathetic but stating ‘Sometimes waking up is an act of bravery’. It’s not about wallowing in pain and darkness but the things you are dealing with when you suffer from depression and therefore it fits perfectly that this song comes along as another up-tempo song. ‘Butterfly effect‘ is another beautiful song about how we are all connected and that every action has an influence on further (re)actions.

Though the songs are about the individual struggling with its inner fears, doubts and other demons and the difficulties of interacting with other individuals/ society there is no drowning in depressive depths. This is definitely prevented by the danceability of the songs. It’s like a signal saying “yes, life is hard, annoying, depressing, too, but it’s useless to drown in sorrow. Keep going!” The great Synth Pop/ Future Pop sound is accomplished in a fantastic way that you don’t find any fillers on the album. Also you can listen to the album from beginning to the end and don’t have the feeling that one song doesn’t fit and disturbs the flow. And although I’m not familiar with all the songs of the former albums from ASSEMBLAGE 23 I definitely enjoyed this one right from the first listening.
