Of Gustav Mahler's symphonies, the Symphony No. 4 in G major is the most neo-Classical in character, the most lighthearted in expression, and the most compact in form, all of which make it the most accessible of the cycle. Because Mahler's effects are precisely calculated, the music invites few liberties, and performances of the symphony tend to be quite similar in style and pacing; consequently, David Zinman and the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich turn in a meticulous rendition that resembles many others in interpretation and is uncontroversial in execution. The single advantage of this recording over others of comparable musical value is the marvelous sound quality of the direct stream digital process and the hybrid SACD format, which are especially good at highlighting Mahler's brilliant orchestration and capturing the orchestra's refined timbres and dynamics. The singing of soprano Luba Orgonásová in the fourth movement is also presented with great clarity and warmth, though the extremely soft levels of much of this movement may require some volume adjustments on standard CD players. Yet for the loveliness of the singing, the sonic depth of the ensemble, and the subtlety of the direction, this is a fine recording that is a worthy installment in Zinman's exceptional Mahler series.
