Hana-bi (はなび HANA-BI), released in the US as "Fireworks", is a 1997 Japanese film written, directed and edited by, and starring Japanese filmmaker Takeshi Kitano. The film's score was composed by renowned Japanese composer Joe Hisaishi. This was their fourth collaboration.
One of the things I noticed immediately while watching HANA-BI (or FIREWORKS, as it was known during its brief US release) was Joe Hisaishi's masterfully understated but incredibly emotional score. The tracks "Sea of Blue" and "Smile & Smile" stand out in this score, compositions which are so lovely they can bring one to the brink of tears with their piano and forlorn harmonica motifs. The fact that Hisaishi was able to do so much with so little (if you compare this to a score by, say, Jerry Goldsmith, you'll see that Hisaishi is substantially more minimalistic) tells volumes. "Angel" embodies the main theme of the film, which is much peppier and perhaps even a bit retro, but it sets up the rest of the soundtrack well. Arguably the best film of renegade auteur Takeshi Kitano's oeuvre, Hana-Bi also contains within it a powerful and moving score by composer Joe Hisaishi. It's great to have this available being that it wasn't for so long. The track that opens the film, "Ever Love" sets the tone perfectly. It's very sad and poignant and fits the movie and its goals like a glove. The rest of the tracks are great and some provide variations on the main theme while others are just lovely compositions. This is easily one of my favorite scores of all time and to expound upon it for too long won't really do it justice. Worthy of a listen, worthy of a purchase and worthy of being called the best Hisaishi score for an Office Kitano film.Terrence Aybar, Amazon.com
