2010 UK issue 5-CD album set comprising of the best selling and critically acclaimed album releases 'Blow My Fuse', 'Cool Kids', 'Hot Wire', 'Kix' and 'Midnite Dynamite'; each album is housed in a mini LP-style card picture sleeve with the complete set presented in a sealed card slipcase.

Originally calling themselves Shooze and eventually changing their name to the Generators and ultimately, Kix, Baltimore's favorite hard rock band garnered quite a reputation for themselves as one of Maryland's most exciting live cover bands prior to signing to Atlantic Records in 1981. Led by frontman Steve Whiteman and creative mastermind/bassist Donnie Purnell, the band is rounded out by drummer Jimmy Chalfant and guitarists Ronnie Younkins (nicknamed 10/10) and Brian Jay Forsythe. Hitting the club circuit six nights a week for three straight years resulted in the band cultivating a huge local fan base and led to a contract with the Time Warner affiliate. Releasing their self-titled debut in 1981, Kix featured live favorites like "Atomic Bombs," the glorious "Yeah, Yeah, Yeah," and "The Kid." To support the release, the quintet set out to hit every club up and down the East Coast. Their 1983 follow-up, Cool Kids, showcased a slightly more commercial side of the band. Spearheaded by the single "Body Talk," rumors ran rampant that the song was written to appease the band's label, who, eager to capture some steam at radio, also forced the band into shooting a horrendous video for the song which featured the band in full-on workout mode. Other songs like "Restless Blood" and "Mighty Mouth" fared a little better. Eager to get back in the studio, Kix partnered up with Ratt and future Warrant producer Beau Hill and released Midnite Dynamite – their "self-proclaimed favorite record ever." The album featured a great single, "Cold Shower," and some other notable cuts like "Sex" and "Bang Bang (Balls of Fire)."

Then a funny thing happened on the way to album number three. As the band got ready for a brief West Coast jaunt, the boys kept hearing some fishy stuff about another young, good looking frontman by the name of Brett Michaels. The big hoopla around town was that the young upstart was said to have stolen singer Steve Whiteman's stage act. Rumor became fact and here is why: prior to Poison relocating to Los Angeles, the band had often come out to see Kix perform live. Now local heroes in their own right, it was clear that Michaels had more than borrowed a few stage moves from the charismatic Kix singer. Sadly, when Kix got the opportunity to open for Poison at L.A.'s Country Club, their worse fears materialized as they stood in stunned silence watching a younger, better looking, musically challenged Poison from the side of the stage. The band had not only stolen Whiteman's stage moves, they'd just about stolen their entire stage act from underneath them.

Weathered but not to be counted out, Kix returned to the studio with hard rock veteran Tom Werman to record what would become their one and only breakthrough record. The band's fourth effort, Blow My Fuse, was released in 1988 and would finally feature the monstrous hit the band had worked so hard for – it would appear in the way of a ballad, the "Dream On" inspired "Don't Close Your Eyes." As the song raced up the charts, the band began to garner the recognition it had fought so long and so hard for. To the band's credit, other excellent cuts also permeated the release. First single and video "Cold Blood," "Blow My Fuse," "Red Lite, Green Lite, TNT," and "No Ring Around Rosie" all showcased the band doing what it does best. As Kix finally graduated to arenas; for the next year and a half, the band would open for heroes AC/DC and Aerosmith and a slew of others including David Lee Roth, Ratt, and the abominable Britny Fox. Kix were on top of the world – if only momentarily. Much larger problems were looming on the horizon. The old adage of "more money, more problems" had materialized itself as a stone around Kix' collective necks for years and years. The band's financial matters were now in a state of complete disarray. Now severely indebted to Atlantic, the band faced a painful wake up call when they realized that they hadn't made a penny off Blow My Fuse. To make matters even worse, the label had plans to shift Kix from their roster to the label's new imprint EastWest Records America. This proved to be disastrous move for the quintet as they now had to deal with a new regime to work their yet-to-be released fifth record. By the time Hot Wire finally hit record stores, the musical climate in 1991 had shifted dramatically. Quote-unquote "hair bands" were now a thing of the past. Grunge was all the rage, making a band like Kix look like the laughing stock of the day. The new trend made it virtually impossible for Kix to garner the radio support necessary for them to prosper commercially.

In hindsight, Hot Wire may have proved to be the band's best sounding record ever. Bolstered by a little MTV airplay, the album's first single "Girl Money" showcased everything that made Kix a first-rate bar band. With double-entendre verses in the vein of classic Bon Scott-era AC/DC, great musicianship, and with a hearty sense of humor to boot, the track would have probably been huge in 1989. Selling just under 200,000 units, the album came and went and Kix returned to doing what it had done all along – hitting the road. The band then toured the Orient and recorded a live record in Japan in 1992. It would be released by Atlantic in 1993 under the uninventive moniker, Kix Live. The 12-track live album would finally fulfill the band's contractual obligation to the label. By the time Kix Live was released, founding member and guitarist Brain Forsythe had quit the band returning to the fold in 1994 in time to record Show Business, the band's ill-fated debut on CMC. Released in 1995, Show Business tanked and the band was history. After a three-year hiatus away from the music biz, Steve Whiteman re-merged in Baltimore as the singer for Funny Money. Forming its own label, Kivel Records, Funny Money released a self-titled debut in 1998 and a sophomore follow-up, Back Again, in 1999. With a personal rift between Kix bassist and chief songwriter Donnie Purnell still in full-effect, chances of a Kix reunion look like a forgone conclusion. However, as rock history has taught us, never say never.

KIX - Kix (1981)
EAC | FLAC | Image (Cue&Log) ~ 241 Mb | Mp3 (CBR320) ~ 94 Mb | Time: 00:36:28

This 1981 album introduced the world to the tongue-in-cheek rock & roll style of Kix. Of all the bands to get lumped in under the "hair metal" tag, Kix was the one of the most unique and adventurous. In fact, the "hair metal" tag was unfair to the band since its pop-metal stylings drew as much inspiration from bubblegum pop and new wave as it did from hard rock. This impressive debut finds its one of a kind sound fully realized: "Heartbeat" welds a yearning pop melody straight out of a teen idol hit onto a bouncing, staccato new wave guitar riff worthy of the Cars, and "Contrary Mary" weds the bubblegum chant of the title to a guitar riff that sounds like the main lick from "Day Tripper" turned inside out. Other standout tracks include the cowbell-driven hormonal anthem "Love at First Sight" and "The Kid," a anti-brat revenge fantasy reminiscent of "Beat on the Brat" by the Ramones. Each of these songs has a deliciously pop quality to their melodies and hooks, yet retain a heavy hard rock sound thanks to amped-up guitar riffs and pounding tempos. The one real downside of the album is that producer Tom Allom, best known for his work with Judas Priest, tries a little too hard to shoehorn the band into a hard rock style at times, resulting in a repetitive, no-frills production style that fails to live up to the ambitious genre bending of the songs. Despite this problem, the infectiousness of the material and the band's irrepressible good cheer shines through, making Kix well worth a spin for anyone who enjoys the lighter, poppier side of hard rock.

KIX - Cool Kids (1983)
EAC | FLAC | Image (Cue&Log) ~ 250 Mb | Mp3 (CBR320) ~ 94 Mb | Time: 00:35:57

This 1983 album pushes Kix in a more new wave direction than their hard-rocking debut outing. On this surface, Cool Kids might seem like a commercialized cash grab: it contains a handful of tracks penned by hired guns like Nick Gilder and Holly Knight and also adds a layer of new wave-styled synthesizer shadings to Kix's pop-metal sound. However, this impression is soon revealed to be wrong as soon as the album is spun because the outside song contributions fit neatly in with the group's own songs and the sonic embellishments enhance the group's sound instead of watering it down. The standouts among the outside contributions are the title track, which blends new wave verses driven by staccato guitar lines with a hard-rocking, shoutalong chorus, and "Body Talk," a danceable fusion of hard rock firepower and a synthesizer-layered new wave beat. The group's songs live up to the standard set by these carefully constructed tunes by presenting an equal amount of hooks and inspiration: "Mighty Mouth" is like a bubblegum song played at hard rock speed and "Get Your Monkeys Out" blends glam rock drum beats with jungle noises and a singalong chorus. However, its finest achievement is "For Shame," an soulful, acoustic power ballad with lovely harmonies that predates all the hair metal ballads that would become popular during the mid-'80s. Pete Solley's slick production manages to bring all this strong material to life by effectively balancing the group's guitar-fuelled power with an array of arrangement frills (voice-box guitars, drum machines) that draw attention to the strong pop hooks in each song. The end result is an underrated gem that is begging to be rediscovered by fans of pop-metal.

KIX - Midnite Dynamite (1985)
EAC | FLAC | Image (Cue&Log) ~ 278 Mb | Mp3 (CBR320) ~ 106 Mb | Time: 00:41:18

By 1985, pop-metal had become one of the dominate genres in pop music thanks to the success of groups like Quiet Riot and Ratt. Although Kix's material remained more ambitious than the pop-metal groups they were lumped in with, the group went for a more pop-metal sound on Midnight Dynamite by using Beau Hill (best known for his work with Ratt and Warrant) as their producer. As a result, songs like the title track and "Layin' Rubber" have the slick, conventional sound expected of pop-metal recordings but manage to rise above the genre's trend with surprising hooks like the unexpectedly lovely harmonies that build up to the chorus in "Midnight Dynamite" and the bubblegum chants that are woven in "Layin' Rubber." The hooks in the songs don't leap out of the speakers this time out the way they did on Kix or Cool Kids, but the group makes up for this by testing out all sorts of new sounds and genres: "Walkin' Away" is a plaintive ballad that is built on synthesizers instead of guitars, and the surprisingly funky "Cold Shower" flirts with rap in its vocal melody. Meanwhile, songs like "Red Hot (Black and Blue)" and "Lie Like a Rug" keep up the album's hard rock quotient and balance their solid guitar riffs with enough pop harmonies and hooks to keep things interesting. Ultimately, Midnight Dynamite lacks the coherence and sonic ambition that marked their first two albums but still remains a strong, likeable collection of pop/rock tunes.

KIX - Blow My Fuse (1988)

By 1988, Kix had only managed to squeeze out three modest-selling records for Atlantic Records. Led in tandem by the endearing frontman Steve Whiteman and chief songwriter and bassist Donnie Purnell, for years, Kix would be unfairly categorized as a supposed "hair band." Worse still, Whiteman would later wake up to find his dancing-on-my-tippy-toes stage act (just think Steven Tyler meets Johnny Thunders on uppers) stolen and carbon copied for the masses by a host of other inferior frontmen including Poison's Brett Michaels. After playing the East Coast club circuit for ten-plus years (with little commercial success to show for it), Kix's own brand of infectious AC/DC power rock-meets-New York, black-hair-dye-glam would finally see its big payoff with the release of 1988's, Blow My Fuse. Produced by hard rock stalwart Tom Werman, Blow My Fuse may have proved to be the band's biggest-selling record but not necessarily its best. Featuring ten solid songs, including the first single/video for the very AC/DC-sounding "Cold Blood," the infectious "She Dropped Me the Bomb," and the excellent title track "Blow My Fuse," the album's big boon would manifest itself in the form of a monster-power ballad, "Don't Close Your Eyes." The track ultimately proved to be Kix's coming-out party and their graduation into the big leagues. Sadly, it would prove to be the band's sole bona fide career hit even though "Cold Blood" made a few tremors here and there. Almost overnight, the band was now travelling on luxury tour busses and effortlessly holding its own as an opening act in arenas across the United States. Embraced with open arms by MTV, "Don't Close Your Eyes" finally allowed Kix to open for the likes of David Lee Roth, heroes AC/DC, and Aerosmith, as well as other soon to be forgotten acts like Ratt and the horrific Britny Fox. After years of hardship, the band could breathe easy (if only for a brief 18 months or so). Just two years later, like many of their other so-called hair rock contemporaries, Kix would see their fortunes crushed with the advent of grunge. The band would solider on with the release of the more mature Hot Wire.

KIX - Hot Wire (1991)
EAC | FLAC | Image (Cue&Log) ~ 335 Mb | Mp3 (CBR320) ~ 117 Mb | Time: 00:46:25

After the huge commercial success of Blow My Fuse, it would take Kix some three years to come up with Hot Wire – the band's fifth album and probably its most focussed record to date. Coming off the commercial triumphs of Blow My Fuse, on the surface, all was peachy keen in the Kix camp. Big problems, however, laid just ahead for the act. For one, the band's financial woes had been mounting for years. Even though they were coming off a platinum-selling release, the band was severely indebted to Atlantic; the album had not only failed to wipe out their previous debt, it had exacerbated it. When all was said and done, the band collectively (save for publishing) hadn't made a penny off any of their previous releases. Notwithstanding, standing on an edge of a cliff was nothing new for this bunch. Still, they were determined to write a strong follow-up to their coming-out effort. Little did they know that yet other outside musical forces would put a monkey wrench in their plans. By late 1991, it was clear that popular music was in the midst of undergoing a major cultural shift. A little band by the name of Nirvana was set on a course to wipe the hair rock slate clean, decimating all naysayers in its path– with Kix being the perfect case in point. Siphoning their financial problems furthermore, the band allowed itself to be bamboozled into shifting labels within the Time Warner corporate culture. The powers that be wanted Kix to be a part of the new Atlantic sub-affiliate, EastWest Records America. In hindsight, this proved to be a bad career move for the band. Not only were their backs against the wall trying to compete with future grunge heroes like Alice in Chains and Soundgarden, they now had to contend themselves with a whole new set of label suits to work their record. Facing some pretty insurmountable challenges, Kix got to work. Music Grinder and Sunset Sound Studios in Los Angeles were chosen for the tracking of Hot Wire. After the final mixes were put to bed, it was clear that the band had emerged with what proved to be by far their best sounding record ever. From album opener "Hot Wire" through "Hee Bee Jee Bee Crush," it's clear that Whiteman and company's confidence level had never been better. Now more than ever, the band was paying homage to their musical rabbis, AC/DC. To demonstrate the point, the album's delightful first single "Girl Money" turns into a full-on tribute performance to Bon Scott's classic tale of debauchery, "The Jack." The track absolutely rocks and in 1989 probably would have established the band as superstars of their genre. Even though "Girl Money" garnered some decent MTV airplay, it wouldn't be able to compete with the gloom and doom now coming out of Seattle. Hot Wire's big power ballad surfaces in the shape of "Tear Down the Walls." The band puts in a valiant effort but unfortunately sounds completely outdated. More solid rockers color the remainder of the record including "Bump the La La," "Rock n' Roll Overdose" (which sounds a lot like Hanoi Rocks), and the heavy on Led Zeppelin-meets-Aerosmith ditty, "Same Jane." Looking back, Hot Wire may prove to the band's most accomplished effort from start to finish. It's too bad that cultural forces stopped it dead in its tracks.
