In the preface to his Musiche da cantar solo of 1609, Sigismondo d'India noted with endearing frankness that in the solo vocal music of his time there was a danger of every piece sounding the same. His own works, however, he sought to rescue from this mire of monotony by means of ''uncommon intervals'' which would have ''a greater emotional force than if they had been written in a uniform way with conventional progressions''. Anyone who would suspect this disc, offering 19 monodies for tenor and continuo, of sameness is hereby advised to believe d'India rather than initial instinct. The music comes from four books of Musiche, published between 1609 and 1623, and though almost all of them deal with the same subject—unrequited love—there is a variety of approaches that should be enough to hold anyone's attention for an hour or so. They range from strophic settings in dance mode, to intense and economical treatments of Petrarch, to two lengthy and powerful laments (both to poetry by d'India himself), and together they offer compelling evidence of why the man was considered second only to Monteverdi as a composer of secular vocal music in the early seventeenth century.
This repertory is the speciality of Nigel Rogers, and indeed it is thanks in no small part to him that such music is as familiar on record as it is. Here, as ever, his singing shows agile technique and responsiveness to text. True, his voice is not notable for sheer loveliness, and there are times when he finds high notes a trifle uncomfortable, but there are still few singers who could show greater affinity with this music. He is resourcefully accompanied, too, by the various chitarrone, harps, harpsichords and organs of Paul O'Dette and Andrew Lawrence-King; if Rogers still has a thing or two to teach the baroque vocalists of today, how enormously has the imaginativeness of continuo-playing improved in recent years!–Lindsay Kemp
