Roy Buchanan - Albums Collection 1973-2003 (13CD)

Roy Buchanan has long been considered one of the finest, yet criminally overlooked guitarists of the blues rock genre whose lyrical leads and use of harmonics would later influence such guitar greats as Jeff Beck, his one-time student Robbie Robertson, and ZZ Top's Billy Gibbons. Although born in Ozark, AR, on September 23, 1939, Buchanan grew up in the small town of Pixley, CA. His father was both a farmer and Pentecostal preacher, which would bring the youngster his first exposure to gospel music when his family would attend racially mixed revival meetings. But it was when Buchanan came across late-night R&B radio shows that he became smitten by the blues, leading to Buchanan picking up the guitar at the age of seven. First learning steel guitar, he switched to electric guitar by the age of 13, finding the instrument that would one day become his trademark: a Fender Telecaster. By 15, Buchanan knew he wanted to concentrate on music full-time and relocated to Los Angeles, which contained a thriving blues/R&B scene at the time. Shortly after his arrival in L.A., Buchanan was taken under the wing by multi-talented bluesman Johnny Otis, before studying blues with such players as Jimmy Nolen (later with James Brown), Pete Lewis, and Johnny "Guitar" Watson. During the mid- to late '50s, Buchanan led his own rock band, the Heartbeats, which soon after began backing rockabilly great Dale ("Suzy Q") Hawkins.

By the dawn of the '60s, Buchanan had relocated once more, this time to Canada, where he signed on with rockabilly singer Ronnie Hawkins. The bass player of Ronnie Hawkins' backing band, the Hawks, studied guitar with Buchanan during his tenure with the band. Upon Buchanan's exit, the bassist-turned-guitarist would become the leader of the group, which would eventually become popular roots rockers the Band: Robbie Robertson. Buchanan spent the '60s as a sideman with obscure acts, as well as working as a session guitarist for such varied artists as pop idol Freddy Cannon, country artist Merle Kilgore, and drummer Bobby Gregg, among others, before Buchanan settled down in the Washington, D.C., area in the mid- to late '60s and founded his own outfit, the Snakestretchers. Despite not having appeared on any recordings of his own, word of Buchanan's exceptional playing skills began to spread among musicians as he received accolades from the likes of John Lennon, Eric Clapton, and Merle Haggard, as well as supposedly being invited to join the Rolling Stones at one point (which he turned down).

That's What I Am Here For The praise eventually led to an hour-long public television documentary on Buchanan in 1971, the appropriately titled The Best Unknown Guitarist in the World, and a recording contract with Polydor Records shortly thereafter. Buchanan spent the remainder of the decade issuing solo albums, including such guitar classics as his 1972 self-titled debut (which contained one of Buchanan's best-known tracks, "The Messiah Will Come Again"), 1974's That's What I Am Here For, and 1975's Live Stock, before switching to Atlantic for several releases. But by the '80s, Buchanan had grown disillusioned by the music business due to the record company's attempts to mold the guitarist into a more mainstream artist, which led to a four-year exile from music between 1981 and 1985.

When a Guitar Plays the Blues Luckily, the blues label Alligator convinced Buchanan to begin recording again by the middle of the decade, issuing such solid and critically acclaimed releases as 1985's When a Guitar Plays the Blues, 1986's Dancing on the Edge, and 1987's Hot Wires. But just as his career seemed to be on the upswing once more, tragedy struck on August 14, 1988, when Buchanan was picked up by police in Fairfax, VA, for public intoxication. Shortly after being arrested and placed in a holding cell, a policeman performed a routine check on Buchanan and was shocked to discover that he had hung himself in his cell. Buchanan's stature as one of blues-rock's all-time great guitarists grew even greater after his tragic death, resulting in such posthumous collections as Sweet Dreams: The Anthology, Guitar on Fire: The Atlantic Sessions, Deluxe Edition, and 20th Century Masters and the live When a Telecaster Plays the Blues, which appeared in 2009.

Roy Buchanan's Second Album (1974) was recorded less than six months after completing his self-titled major-label debut, Roy Buchanan (1972), and sported a slightly amended version of the Snakestretchers – featuring Ned Davis (drums), Dick Heintze (keyboards), Teddy Irwin (rhythm guitar), Chuck Tilley (vocals/rhythm guitar), and, replacing Pete Van Allen, Don Payne (bass). The vibe is much in keeping with the previous effort, albeit decidedly more blues-based. Likewise, the arguably misplaced countrified cuts have been dispensed with, as the musicians concentrate more specifically on traditional blues and original compositions. Once again, the choice of covers is not only impeccable, but has been significantly personalized by the guitarist's unique sensibilities and inimitable timbre. "Five String Blues" leads the pack, revealing the meticulous craftsmanship that Buchanan places upon each intonation, as his precision is never obscured within the flurry of unleashed notes. While less technical than emotive, Buchanan's gift for interpretation is nothing short of spellbinding, as the reading of Erskine Hawkins' "After Hours" demonstrates. "Tribute to Elmore James" is an R&B-laden rocker with copious nods to James' slide fretwork as well as Buchanan's own well-placed emphasis. Yet another facet to this aggregate is the funkier midtempo "I Won't Tell You No Lies." Sadly, the Snakestretchers tenure concludes on this LP. By the time of Buchanan's follow-up, That's What I Am Here For (1974), undue influences would recast the guitarist's rhythmic support to an increasingly lessened ensemble effect.

The late Roy Buchanan is a sadly underrated cult figure in the world of hard rock guitar. His aggressive attack, soulful selection of notes, and general playing attitude made him one of the most respected players of his generation. With heavy competition from musicians such as Eric Clapton, Duane Allman, and Jimi Hendrix, this is quite a feat. That's What I Am Here For, one of his earlier Polydor albums, illustrates all of the above artists in fine style. The extended reading of "Hey Joe" is enough to seal Buchanan's reputation, with some lightning fast and super heavy blues runs. Overall, the album suffers from some weak songwriting, but there are some gems, such as an extremely sad "Home Is Where I Lost Her," a tale of the death of a lady friend. Billy Price's vocals are a bit mannered and somewhat dated, but effective nonetheless. Another of the album's highlights is "Rodney's Song," a soulful Southern rocker that would have been at home on an early Allman Brothers album. Buchanan really rips on this one, and proves what an awesome player he really was.

By the time this long-player hit the street, Roy Buchanan (guitar/vocals) had already departed from his oft-acrimonious relationship with Polydor Records. To their credit, the label issued Live Stock (1975), which captured the artist in performance at Town Hall in New York City on November 27, 1974. This disc features the recently corralled combo of Bill Price (vocals), John Harrison (bass), Malcolm Lukens (keyboards), and Byrd Foster (drums/vocals). Interestingly, the instrumentalists would reconvene behind Buchanan for his next two studio albums, A Street Called Straight (1976) and Loading Zone (1977), as well as the thoroughly superior, import-only Live in Japan (2003). With the exception of the seminal Snakestretchers, this aggregate would stay with the guitarist for longer than any of his numerous other support bands. Practically by default, having returned Buchanan to the stage, the music instantly becomes more conducive to inspiration. The set list highlights both a sampling from earlier efforts, as well as a few covers that are personalized by Buchanan's inimitable stringed artistry. Whether by design or serendipity, each track focuses on his animated solos. Ranging from the driving boogie of Roy Milton's "Reelin' and Rockin" [note: not to be confused with Chuck Berry's rock & roll anthem of virtually the same name] to the stinging fretwork that commences the Memphis soul of Al Green's slithery "I'm a Ram," Buchanan is undeniably at the peak of his abilities. The spirited reading of "Further on up the Road" is particularly worthwhile, as his leads alternately from a rapid-fire slide action to emphatic wails that punctuate the melody with equal measures of deadly accuracy and limber precision. Live Stock is a primary recommendation for all dimensions of blues guitar lovers and those interested in experiencing the craftsmanship of the man once hailed as "The Greatest Unknown Guitarist In The World." Hardcore collectors and the like should also be aware of the essential nine-plus minute rendering of Neil Young's "Down by the River," which was recorded at this show, yet remained unissued until its inclusion on Sweet Dreams: The Anthology (1992) double-disc set. Equally as impressive, and as highly recommended, is the posthumously released archival American Axe: Live in 1974 (2003), as well as the previously mentioned Live in Japan (2003) – both of which have the same musicians and similarly exceptional results.

After an uneven four-year/five-LP deal with Polydor, Roy Buchanan (guitar/vocals) linked up with Atlantic Records for his next trio of long-players, commencing with A Street Called Straight (1976). Under the direction of Arif Mardin, and sporting the same combo that he had been using during his practically incessant touring, this disc is infinitely stronger than his previous non-live effort, In the Beginning (1974). The core unit of John Harrison (bass), Malcolm Lukens (keyboards), and Byrd Foster (drums/vocals), are augmented by a host of all-stars such as Andy Newmark (drums), Will Lee (bass), Billy Cobham (percussion), the Brecker Brothers horn section, and vocals from former Rascals' member Eddie Brigati. Perhaps Mardin's mid-'70s success, creating soul and funk-oriented platters, encouraged him to take the artist in a similar course. Buchanan definitely sounds not only in his element throughout this title , but he rises to the occasion, providing some of his most incendiary licks and aggressive instrumental interaction in a studio setting. This also manifests itself with a bounty of self-penned compositions. Rather than including one or two of his own pieces in an album consisting of primarily cover material, nine of the 11 cuts are, at the very least, co-written by Buchanan. As always however, it is his unmistakable, if not singular fretwork that truly coalesces A Street Called Straight. The frenetic opening whine of "Running Out" immediately sets the tone as Buchanan's guitar sings with a woozy fluid intonation, perfect for his expressive and emotive leads. The middle-eight solo is a prime example of his uncanny ability to switch from sharp, jagged, and sinister, to a string-stretching, bluesy intonation. This contrasts the backbeat-laden "Keep What You Got" funkfest, and the noir combination of acoustic and electric textures on Billy Roberts "Good God Have Mercy." The reading of Jimi Hendrix' "If Six Was Nine" is an almost natural extension of the original, with a brooding and slinky rhythm. While some purists may consider the overproduction slick, Mardin's creation is an undeniable improvement over his prior non-live outings.

This album introduced me to Roy Buchanan, and I've heard it many times over (and over). It might seem a real mixture of hard core blues instrumental and country - there are better albums - but the two outstanding tracks "Green onions" and "Ramon's Blues" are perhaps two of the most popular of Roys tunes and two of the best (Roy shares Ramons Blues with Steve Cropper in one of the best 1,2,3,4 blues guitar solo instrumentals ever). Ok, the other songs don't quite fit but are good by themselves. Get "the best of" if you're new to Roy Buchanan, but this album is still good for fans.

While not exactly a 180-degree rotation from the thoroughly enjoyable funk-fest on A Street Called Straight (1976), Roy Buchanan's subsequent album, You're Not Alone (1978), is an exceedingly more polished affair with a completely new cast of studio musicians. The instrumental space-themed effort may have worked well in the midst of the undue hype that Star Wars and Close Encounters of the Third Kind were glutting the media with. That said, modern listeners may find the concept trite and at times, downright boring. It is against that backdrop that Buchanan's typically aggressive fretwork is somewhat incongruously juxtaposed. This certainly doesn't discount the drive and passion of his fiery solos, or his profound ability to carve out poignant textures with undeniable heart and unquestionable precision. An apt example is the extended and subdued "Fly…Night Bird." Behind the rote and otherwise perfunctory support, the guitarist soars, swoops, and glides with the nobility of an eagle and the grace of a swan. The cover of Joe Walsh's "Turn to Stone" fares an even more precarious fate, as the compelling and scathing electric opening drifts into a laid-back smooth jazz vibe, which is resolved by a rather milquetoast mid-tempo rhythm over which Buchanan arranges his shredding and soulful leads. Gary St. Clair (vocals) is featured on the adeptly executed rendering of Neil Young's "Down by the River." It pales in comparison to the versions from Live in Japan (2003), or the seminal Buck & the Snake Stretchers (1971). Even the high energy and open-throttled rocker, "Supernova," seems to lack the grit and authenticity needed to take the tune from its over-produced state to a suitable vehicle for Buchanan's unmitigated talents. Ardent enthusiasts may find You're Not Alone more appealing than the average listener. However, the general consensus is that there are infinitely more valid examples available of the guitarists' arguably unmatched prowess.

It wasn’t until the mid-1980s – and a series of albums for the Alligator label – that Roy Buchanan really found his calling on album: fiery, blues rock. Back in the 1970s when he recorded his first albums for Polydor he followed a country blues route which never quite came to life although during that period he recorded the seminal ‘The Messiah Has Come Again’ later to be covered by the likes of Gary Moore.

By 1977 he was teamed up with producer, jazz fusioner, Stanley Clarke and traded licks with legendary Stax musician Steve Cropper for ‘Loading Zone’ which more than any previous album highlighted his unique guitar technique and commercial potential. One further album for Polydor/Atlantic followed.

‘My Babe’ marks an interim statement when Buchanan was ‘between labels’. It was self-produced and lacks the strong material that might have been imposed by an independent producer/main label. With a scratch band that included Paul Jacob on vocals most of this fare doesn’t rise above acceptable bar band fodder.

Musically it looks back to the rockabilly style that Buchanan grew up with in the late-1950s when he worked with Dale Hawkins as illustrated by his re-working of the Little Walter penned title track which he recorded originally in 1958.

There is little hint of Buchanan’s incendiary style that was better captured – and thankfully – on those Alligator albums. Only the instrumental ‘Blues For Gary’ and ‘My Sonata’ are really compelling in this collection.

Guitar-wise, Buchanan was a technical wizard, his playing characterised by pinch harmonic ‘whistles’ and tonal effects obtained solely from his technique rather than external ‘effects’.

This reissue of an album that was only ever available on CD for a short time in the States is most interesting for the added 30 minute contemporaneous promotional interview (also including some of the tracks).

This reveals again that Buchanan turned down a stint in the Stones after the death of Brian Jones and hints that at least for a decade Buchanan was a nearly-man eschewing the trappings of wider fame although a hero to those fellow musos like Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page who cited him as an influence.

Sadly Buchanan hung himself in a prison cell in August 1988 after being arrested for drink related offences although as the liner note indicates there is still a mystery surrounding the actual circumstances. There is no doubt, however, that Roy Buchanan was a troubled soul fighting inner demons and not least alcohol.

Thirty years on from his untimely death, this is a timely reissue. Those inspired to find out more should also search out the anthology ‘Sweet Dreams: The Anthology’ released in 1992.

Roy Buchanan was always one of the most respected guitarists in his field, ever since the '70s. However, he hit a rough patch in the early '80s, falling out of favor and finding record contracts hard to find. He made a startling comeback in 1985 with When a Guitar Plays the Blues, his first record for Alligator Records. The wild and wooly, no-holds-barred version of Henry Mancini's "Peter Gunn" that opens this album reminds that Roy Buchanan is not your average blues-rock axeslinger. With a dazzling arsenal of chops and a tone that can, alternately, slice through granite and float like cumulous clouds, Buchanan's standing as a masterful technician seems to grow with each successive release, and DANCING ON THE EDGE is no exception.

The six instrumental and five vocal tracks here (featuring Texas R&B institution Delbert McClinton), though steeped in traditional blues, push at the limitations of the genre. For example, there's the ear-shattering jump country of "Petal to the Metal" and the expansive surf jam "Jungle Gym." DANCING rocks harder than most of Buch's releases, with the guitarist's sizzling six-stringery (check out the barrelhouse acid boogie of "Whiplash") backed by a crack studio band and McClinton's raw singing (check out "You Can't Judge a Book By the Cover"). Buchanan fans and worshippers of the blues guitar won't be disappointed by this one.

The late guitarist's twelfth and last recording has stretches when he slows his attack down, thinks methodically, and takes heed of form and direction; at such times his storytelling is immensely more concise than usual. To hell with believable stories, though; the instrumental "-High Wire" is wilder and more fantastic than a whirling dervish juggling knives on a trampoline.

Master guitarist Roy Buchanan elevates his already astronomical musical standard on his third Alligator release, HOT WIRES. With his searing tone, fluid runs, screeching harmonics, dynamics experiments, and grab bag of scratches, wails, and noodles, Buchanan's Fender often sounds less like a guitar than a channel for highly articulate alien intelligence. As usual, Roy has backed himself with some of the finest blues and rock studio musicians–including guitarist Donald Kinsey (of the Kinsey Report) and vocalists Johnny Sayles ("That Did It") and Kanika Kress (on Otis Redding's "These Arms of Mine").

Though the band provides thunderous, spot-on backing on conventional blues workouts ("Ain't No Business") and rave-up instrumentals ("Country Boogie") alike, the spotlight is on Buch throughout, particularly on his own compositions, the acid surf "High Wire" and the pummeling "Flash Chordin'." HOT WIRES is yet another testament to the skills of this dazzling, unfairly under-recognized musician.

The third non-crossed licensed anthology from the master guitarist focuses on his three-album stint at Chicago's blues-based Alligator Records. The artist considered the music he made during his 1985-1987 association with the label the most honest of his career. Since he received complete creative control on these discs, his 1988 suicide, a short year after Hot Wires – one of Roy Buchanan's best albums ever – was released, makes his untimely death even more shocking. With its 16 tracks – two previously unreleased – almost evenly divided between instrumentals and (predominantly) guest vocals shared by Otis Clay, Delbert McClinton, and Johnny Sayles (Buchanan tentatively and gruffly talks/sings three selections), this is not only a terrific overview of the musician's astounding guitar virtuosity, but a sad coda to a short yet intense career that never broke him through to a wide audience. "You know I ain't broke, but I'm badly bent" are not only lyrics to "Ain't No Business," but also the sad state of affairs the artist found himself in as he was recording his final disc. With a completely unique guitar style that effortlessly shifted from a crying moan (as in the opening bars) to his cover of Otis Redding's "These Arms of Mine" to a raging howl – exemplified by the thumping take on Willie Dixon's "You Can't Judge a Book by the Cover" – Buchanan effectively covered all the blues-soul-rock bases with passion, integrity, and class. His economy of style is obvious in the concentrated 2:29 track (and appropriately titled) instrumental "Whiplash." Although the guitarist's material was often subpar on his two previous labels, the music he recorded during these three years was top-notch, and consistently throbbed with his trademarked rugged, steely tone. While he occasionally stooped to slinging out a wild flurry of fret-shredding cacophony, as in the middle of "Peter Gunn," just to provide proof of his jaw-dropping abilities, Buchanan more frequently kept those more ostentatious impulses in check. There's none of the gospel and low-key country he often dipped into during his Polydor years, yet the essence of those genres is imbedded in his blues and R&B work here. This Alligator Deluxe Edition features rare photos, adequate track information, and a heartfelt remembrance penned by label boss Bruce Iglauer. At 61 minutes, only its playing time is questionable, since there easily could have been another quarter-hour of music added. Still, for those who need a concise compilation of Roy Buchanan's phenomenal skills with no filler, this handy disc fits the bill.

It’s not too far of a stretch to say Roy Buchanan was one of the most unique guitar players in the past 40 years. This recording, done at two shows in 1974, does nothing to dispel that.

Very few rock guitarists were delving into the world of chromatics like he does on “Too Many Drivers.” His volume swells on the slow-blues version of “C.C. Rider” are an amazing thing to hear. Yes, plenty of folks do it now, but then, it certainly was not something you heard every day. The same song has a long solo that has two-and-three note bends that are truly a treat to hear. There’s a version of “Johnny B. Goode” here that has the goofiest, but most fun intro you’ll ever hear to that song.

Numerous songs here, including a wonderful version of “The Messiah Will Come Again,” have Roy’s trademark pick harmonic chirps. His very quick right hand makes him unique among his peers and helped him play unique licks and solos that developed in a way nobody else could. There are 11 songs here, and no boring guitar solos.

That’s the good news. The bad news is some of the problems that have always plagued Roy’s recordings show up here. The vocals, at best, are listenable. At their worst, well… It’s a pleasure when nobody is singing and Roy’s soloing.

The recordings are not bad, but not as clean as some may like. I personally loved the feel and sound. It felt like you were there, right down to the nasty buzz of Roy’s amp on some cuts.

This project was put together by Tom Principato, a pretty darn good player in his own right, and he did a nice job of assembling what a Roy concert might have sounded like.
