Schizoid Dimension: A Tribute to King Crimson contains contributions by a variety of artists on Cleopatra-affiliated labels, including Controlled Bleeding, Chrome, Brand X, Pressurehed, Astralasia, Melting Euphoria, Alien Planetscapes, Architectural Metaphor, Xcranium, Spirits Burning, Solid Space, and ex-Crimson violinist David Cross, whose track features John Wetton on vocals. Sometimes the artists' styles don't really mesh well with the music, but at other times, the reinterpretations can be fresh and compelling.

Given the disappointing sales of the previous two All-Starr Band live albums, Ringo's star wasn't bright enough to get this release out on a major label or even a conventional label. As a stopgap, it was available only in Blockbuster Music stores for a brief time – at the rock-bottom bargain price of 5.99 dollars – and further volumes were not forthcoming. A shame, actually, for this was the best of the three All-Starr albums up to that point, representing what was probably Ringo's finest all-around group of the 1990s.

The Beatles Emerging from Liverpool, England in 1960, the Beatles were a seminal British group that evolved from rock/pop origins into pioneers of musical experimentation. The band solidified its iconic lineup in 1962, featuring John Lennon (vocals, rhythm guitar, harmonica, keyboards, percussion), Paul McCartney (vocals, bass, guitar, keyboards, percussion), George Harrison (lead guitar, vocals, keyboards), and Ringo Starr (drums, vocals, percussion) after signing a recording contract with EMI. This followed a brief period with Stuart Sutcliffe (bass, 1960-61) and Pete Best (drums, 1960-62).Initially recognized for their Merseybeat style, the Beatles soon ventured into uncharted musical territories, exploring psychedelia and pioneering innovative production techniques that incorporated tape loops and other effects. Over their active years, they created a legacy of 12 studio albums.

Van Zant is an American musical duo composed of brothers Donnie Van Zant and Johnny Van Zant. Both are brothers of the late Ronnie Van Zant, former lead singer for the Southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd. Johnny became the lead vocalist for the reunited Lynyrd Skynyrd in 1987, and Donnie was also the leader and vocalist of .38 Special. Johnny recorded as a member of the 1980s southern rock band The Johnny Van Zant Band which released albums in 1980, 1981 and 1982. The band shortened its name to Van Zant for the release of its fourth album in 1985, the eponymous Van Zant on Geffen Records. This album saw chart success with "You've Got to Believe in Love" and "I'm a Fighter", both of which peaked on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart.

Rockin' is a budget-priced collection covering Dave Edmunds' Columbia recordings. Which means, of course, that his biggest hits and best-known songs are present as live tracks, not the original hit single versions, and that the remaining cuts are culled from uneven records which were often hampered by Jeff Lynne's heavy production. Therefore, Rockin' doesn't capture Edmunds at his best, but it does offer a fair overview of a decidedly uneven portion of his career.

Steve Davis is one of the breed of young boppers whom have mastered the idiom. Here, the trombonist leads a group mostly culled from One for All, a conglomeration of extraordinary musicians who perform regularly together in the Big Apple. Veteran pianist Harold Mabern joins them, adding experience and depth. Davis plays a mean 'bone, strongly indebted to Curtis Fuller. Like Fuller, he sticks to the middle range of the horn, boasts a somewhat nasal tone, and plays smoothly at almost any tempo. He is also a good, if cautious, composer. Tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander continues to grow both in stature and skill, and contributes solidly with strong solos. While there is nothing revolutionary or new in the group's playing, there is a strong sense of camaraderie and precision that lifts this performance to a higher level.

Fans of King Crimson, Univers Zero and Magma, pay attention: Happy Family is one of the best bands currently happening in Japan right now. Furious riffing, noisy angular drumming, intense energy and top-notch musicianship is what they're about. Their guitar work is in the vein or Robert Fripp; the keyboards recall either Univers Zero or Magma (depending on what passages you're hearing); the fretless bass work will no doubt remind you of the Magma/Zeuhl fusion sound; and the drumming will instantly recall Bill Bruford or Daniel Denis of Univers Zero. Throw in a bit of heavy metal, some Japanese goofiness and you're in for quite a sonic ride.

This 1997 follow-up to The Naked Truth repeats the basic "live and acoustic" formula of that album, but it isn't the uninspired retread one might expect. Since the last album used most of the group's familiar numbers, this collection of songs digs deeper into the group's catalog to highlight some lesser-known gems that will delight Golden Earring fanatics. Two of the best examples are "Buddy Joe," a rousing adventure tale that translates perfectly to the acoustic setting, and "Bombay," a tune that takes an almost hoedown-style quality when stripped of its electric guitars. The set list also includes a few covers that appeared on Love Sweat, "Who Do You Love" and "This Wheel's on Fire."

The first single from 1997's album Pop, 'Discotheque' went to No.1 in several countries and was performed live for the first time during the PopMart tour opener in Las Vegas on April 25, 1997.
In October 1996 a 30-second snippet of the track, taken from a promotional release, made it onto the web, with the entire MP3 circulating within a couple of months. This brought forward the release of the single, which itself heralded the dance-music vibe of the album where the band were 'trying to make an ode to club culture without using the tools of dance music' as Bono later put it. The video for the single, with the band performing as members of The Village People, took some fans by surprise. 'I like to think we were dangerously ahead of our time,' reflects Edge. 'It is a great video and has been copied many times since.'

The excellent band Jane, from Hannover, made quite a splash on the international scene and was discovered by Brain founder Günter Körber. On this, their third outing originally released in 1974, the band delivers unusually raw songs. But despite the missing keyboards, Jane III disseminates an almost unbelievable and hard to explain mythical fascination, which emanated from a lot of the groups in the seventies. Through the instrumentation of two guitars, bass & drums and the (typical for Jane) slow and brooding tempo, Jane III sounds especially timeless compared to their other releases.

There is nothing left wanting in these performances. Hantaï and Verzier both display adroit virtuosity, possess warm tones but distinctive approaches, and share a telepathic sense of interplay, all excellent qualities in these intimate chamber works. Brother Pierre Hantaï on the keyboard sticks with them throughout, following them even in the most tempo rubato-saturated Sarabande. The lion's share of the pieces here are in the standard stylized Baroque dance forms, but Marais' expressive melodies, pungent harmonies, and highly individual take on the forms make each piece unique.

Several generations of Bachs have been gathered by Richard Marlow and the Choir of Trinity College, Cambridge for their programme of motets. All of them have been recorded at various times in the past but many only infrequently, and one or two, perhaps, now make their first appearance on CD. There is no dull music here and two of the pieces, at least, are of outstanding expressive beauty. The earlier of these is Johann Bach’s profoundly affecting Unser Leben ist ein Schatten (“Our life is but a shadow”). This member of the clan survived both the Black Death and the savage bombardment of Erfurt during the Thirty Years War.
