An unheard recording of a 1968 high school performance by jazz great Thelonious Monk, Palo Alto, is set for release by Impulse! Records on 31 July. It will mark his posthumous debut on the revered label. The surprise performance came about after 16-year-old high school student Danny Scher had a dream to invite the storied pianist and composer and his all-star quartet to perform a concert at his local high school in Palo Alto, California. Against a backdrop of racial tension and political volatility, the concert took place on 27 October 1968, and was recorded by the school’s janitor.

This is just one of the delights in the enticing selection box offered by Hamish Milne, a long-standing and ardent champion of Medtner’s music. These two discs explore the many miniatures—in size though not in ambition—that he wrote throughout his life. The very opening of his Mood Pictures shows a remarkable sophistication for a man barely out of his teens, while the magnificent pair of Elegies forms a fitting conclusion to a set that reminds us that it is sometimes among the ‘miscellaneous’ works that the greatest gems are to be found.

This new two-disc album contains sonatas from the only surviving manuscript of Aldebrando Subissati, the Italian Kapell-meister of Polish king Jan Kazimierz. This is a collection of twenty compositions with a rather unusual structure, since most of them consist of two movements, which was not a common practice in the Baroque era. The leading instrument is the violin, accompanied by either theorbo with posi-tive organ or viola da gamba with harp-sichord.

French instrumental prog-rock/fusion band from mid 1970's that did 3 albums and backed violinist David Rose and singer Yves Simon. Serge Perathoner is a notable member who has gone on to produce many artists. This group started as a back up of one of the most secretive but highly regarded singer of La Chanson Française, Yves Simon, but soon decided to form their own career in parallel to their monetary occupations. The standard prog quartet was lead by keyboardist Perathoner and they recorded in Herouville their first album, Priglacit, in 75 and released it through Y Simon's label RCA Balance and they developed a good jazz-rock that's somewhere between MAHAVISHNU and BRAND X.
